Darwin Nunez has come in for criticism after failing to find the net

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has launched a scathing attack on Darwin Nunez, declaring the striker is "not a Liverpool player" following the Reds' 4-0 FA Cup victory over Accrington Stanley.

The former Anfield hero criticised Nunez's performance after the Uruguayan squandered two clear chances early in the match.

"The more I see him, the more I think he's not a Liverpool player," Fowler said during the match coverage.

"People might have a go at me for saying this [because] he works hard. You're not bringing in a player because he works hard. That should be a prerequisite anyway."

Nunez's struggles in front of goal were evident as he failed to convert two big opportunities just 12 minutes into the cup tie.

The £85million striker has managed just one goal in his last 14 appearances, despite Liverpool's impressive form under manager Arne Slot.

Pundit Karen Carney was particularly critical of one glaring miss, stating: "When you pay [£85million], you expect a bit more. Concentrate, hit the target."

Fowler added: "The worst you can do is hit it over the bar, you've got to make the keeper work."

The former striker, who scored 171 goals in 330 games for Liverpool, pointed to Nunez's decision-making as a key issue behind his struggles.

"I don't think he's quick enough in his thought in terms of how he should be finishing," the former striker explained.

"He's quick on the ground, we know how quick he is, but when you are a striker, your speed of thought has got to be quicker than anyone else.

"When he has time to think about it, he struggles. I think his speed of thought as a striker... has got to improve."

Since joining Liverpool in 2022, Nunez has scored 37 goals in 121 appearances across all competitions, with just two Premier League strikes this season.

Recent reports suggest AC Milan are interested in securing the Uruguayan on loan during the January transfer window.

However, Liverpool are unlikely to sanction any departure for Nunez without having a replacement lined up.

The striker's £85million transfer fee from Benfica remains a significant investment for the Merseyside club.

Liverpool currently sit in commanding positions across all competitions, leading both the Premier League and Champions League tables.

The Reds have already secured their place in the Champions League last-16.

With the club competing in all four competitions, they face a potentially demanding fixture schedule in the second half of the season.

This busy calendar makes it particularly crucial for Liverpool to maintain their squad depth, further reducing the likelihood of sanctioning Nunez's departure this month.
