Two of Europe's best teams could not be separated in Sunday's Premier League clash

Liverpool and Manchester City played out a 1-1 draw to open up what may become one of the most thrilling Premier League title races of all time.

Arsenal will end the weekend top of the table on goal difference and will be harbouring hopes of ending their 20-year wait for a title this season.

City will have relished their chances of picking up just a second Anfield win under Pep Guardiola when the team news was announced an hour before kick-off.

Mohamed Salah was only fit enough for the bench, while the injury picked up by Ibrahima Konate on Thursday ruled him out of the game entirely.

City started the stronger and were ahead midway through the first half when a cute and clever corner outsmarted Liverpool and John Stones turned in at the near post.

The visitors were looking ominous but they gave Liverpool a way back in early in the second half through an Alexis Mac Allister penalty.

Nathan Ake's under-hit backpass was intercepted by Darwin Nunez and City goalkeeper Ederson took out the striker, with Mac Allister keeping his cool to score the resulting spot-kick.

Luis Diaz then missed three huge chances for Liverpool to take the lead for the first time as City looked a shadow of the team they were in the first half.

Liverpool looked likeliest to score again but couldn't break through as GB News looks at three things we learned from a thrilling clash on Merseyside.

City fall into Liverpool's trap

When you play at Anfield, you're not only up against a top team but you also have to play the crowd.

The home fans were relatively subdued at some points in the first half and City were well on top.

The last thing Guardiola's team needed to do was wake up the Liverpool supporters but they did just that two minutes after half-time.

Ake is usually a reliable player for City but it was a moment of madness from both him and Ederson.

Ederson didn't need to take Nunez out. It cost the Brazilian his place in the game as the collision forced him off through injury a few minutes later.

All of a sudden, the crowd were up and that is when Liverpool are at their most dangerous.

Jurgen Klopp's team were almost creating chances at will for a period, with Diaz the main culprit in not keeping his composure in front of goal.

City are usually able to maintain their heads on the biggest of occasions but, as has been proven so often in the past, Anfield is one ground they have not yet cracked.

Kevin De Bruyne's reaction to being taken off was perhaps a clear indication at City's frustration at letting the game slip.

The Belgian was visibly angry when he was replaced by Mateo Kovacic with over 20 minutes of the game remaining.

De Bruyne continued to vent his feelings as he made his way back to the bench, while he had an animated conversation with Guardiola.

The midfielder is City's star man and he knows how big a win today would have meant in the quest for a fourth title in a row.

A draw is the result Arsenal will have wanted after they went top of the table on Saturday.

There won't be many occasions in the remainder of the season where both Liverpool and City drop points on the same weekend.

The Gunners are still third favourites in many people's eyes and have a tougher fixture list than both of their rivals.

But perhaps being an underdog will help Mikel Arteta's team this season after falling by the wayside in dramatic fashion last term.
