The Red Devils star is contracted to the club until 2027, while the fallen giants also have the option to extend his deal by an additional year

Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly after £200,000-a-week as Manchester United attempt to tie the youngster down to a new contract amid strong transfer interest from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

The midfielder is regarded as one of the best academy talents to have come out of Old Trafford in recent years, having established himself as a key player for the fallen giants.

But talk of Mainoo potentially leaving United has started to gather momentum at a time when the club are attempting to tie him down to a new deal.

It emerged earlier this week that the Red Devils were some way off agreeing fresh terms with the England international, with Chelsea monitoring developments.

United don't need to rush with Mainoo, who is contracted to the club until 2027 - while they also have the option to extend his current deal by a further year.

With the Red Devils needing to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations, however, there's a possibility he could be cut loose.

United have endured a wretched season so far, with Erik ten Hag sacked and Ruben Amorim struggling to turn things around.

And everybody, barring Amad Diallo and Leny Yoro, is on the market as a result.

According to the Daily Mail, Mainoo wants a huge £200,000-a-week in order to commit his future to United.

Antony, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro are the only stars to earn more than that at the current moment in time.

The report says United would rather sell Alejandro Garnacho than Mainoo, with the winger's stock falling in recent months.

The Argentina international, like Mainoo, is a product of the club's academy.

He was often a key player under Ten Hag but, since the appointment of Amorim, has found regular game time tough to come by.

Garnacho has been benched for the club's last five matches, whiile he was overlooked for their epic 2-1 win over Manchester City last month.

With the 20-year-old struggling to fit into Amorim's 3-4-3 system, talk is rife he could be sold.

But United may end up losing Mainoo as well, if they're unable to agree on fresh terms, while Rasmus Hojlund may also be offloaded at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, United are next in action against Arsenal in the FA Cup on Sunday (3pm).

They will go into that match on the back of a good performance in the weekend's 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

And Amorim said he was 'angry' after that positive result, having been left baffled at how his side can up their levels for matches against some off the bigger teams in the Premier League.

"I think we should get mad and disappointed more than Newcastle and Nottingham Forest," he said.

"Today, we need to be really disappointed. I have to calm down and say the right things.

"We're in a difficult moment but it's hard to not get really mad. I’m happy for the performance. I’m not happy for the result but I’m really mad because of the other games.

"Sometimes, it's like that, everybody is angry with my players and I have to do the opposite. Today, everyone will say they did everything right, and I am allowed to be upset."
