The Portuguese could now return to the Premier League

Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Roma, with the Serie A giants choosing to relieve the Portuguese of his duties following a difficult season so far.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss took charge of the club in 2021.

He won 68 of his 138 matches in charge, while also guiding the side to UEFA Conference League glory in 2022.

But with Roma currently sitting ninth in the Serie A table, they've now decided to wield the axe.

A statement from the club read: "AS Roma announces that José Mourinho and his technical collaborators will leave the Club with immediate effect.

"Mourinho was announced as the sixtieth manager in Roma's history in May 2021.

"He led the team to win the Conference League in Tirana on 25 May 2022 and to the Europa League final in Budapest last season."

Roma chiefs Dan and Ryan Friedkin added: “We thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for the passion and commitment he has shown since his arrival in the Giallorossi.

“We will always have great memories of his stewardship, but we believe that, in the best interests of the Club, immediate change is necessary.

“We wish Jose and his collaborators the best for the future.”

Mourinho has appeared disgruntled this season.

And results at Roma haven't been good enough, with the club now poised to look for a new manager.

Disciplinary issues have plagued his time in the Italian capital as well.

Just last week, Mourinho was given a red card for the second match in a row after a chaotic derby - with Lazio beating Roma 1-0.

The 60-year-old, who is considered one of the best managers of his generation, departs on the back of a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan last time out.

And it'll now be interesting to see what the future holds for him.

Mourinho could return to the Premier League, with some fans believing he might replace Eddie Howe at Newcastle.

Howe worked wonders on Tyneside last season, guiding the Toon into the Champions League.

But results have regressed this term and that's led to speculation about Mourinho potentially coming in.

Saudi Arabia is another potential destination, too.

Speaking back in October, the decorated manager admitted that he was 'convinced' he would work in the Middle East in the future.

He said at the time: "I will go to Saudi Arabia in some free time, but I am convinced that I will work there.

"I don't know when, but I am pretty sure of it.

"No one knows the future, but I will definitely do this [working in Saudi Arabia]."

He also previously said: "Doors are always open for me in Saudi Arabia. I want to feel the development there.

"Cristiano [Ronaldo] was the first to go there and give a different perspective immediately.

"The players thought at first that it was a one-man show but they realised in the summer that everything was really changing.

"Many players, not just at the last period of their careers, but also some players at the best years of their careers, are coming because the competition is real, not just at domestic League, but also the AFC Champions League is very interesting."
