Jose Mourinho is a man in the spotlight once again, with the Fenerbahce boss grabbing the nose of a rival manager after seeing his side crash to defeat on Wednesday night.

Fenerbahce were beaten 2-1 by Galatasaray, with their sworn enemy advancing to the semi-finals of the Turkish Cup.


After the game, however, Mourinho allowed his temper to get the better of him.

The 62-year-old strolled up to rival boss Okan Buruk and grabbed his counterpart by the nose, with Buruk falling to the ground theatrically and clutching his face.

Mourinho is now likely to receive a ban for his actions, something that will add to Fenerbahce's woes.

But those who have followed football for a long time are hardly likely to be surprised given how the former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss has conducted himself at periods over the years.

Mourinho is a maverick. He always has been.

While managing Porto in 2004, he guided them through a Champions League clash with Manchester United - and then infamously ran down the touchline right in front with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Back in the 2005/2006 campaign, when he was managing Chelsea, he was given a two-match ban that ruled him out of attending a crunch Champions League showdown with Bayern Munich.

Mourinho was, per UEFA rules, forbidden from being in the Blues dressing room.

However, the story goes that he actually snuck himself inside by hiding in a laundry basket. Explaining that decision, he said: I went there and nobody saw me. The problem was to leave after. Stewart Bannister the kit man put me in the basket - it was a little bit open so I could breathe.

“But when he is taking it outside the dressing room, the UEFA guys were following and desperate to find me so he closed the box and I couldn't breathe.”

After being sacked by Chelsea in 2007, Mourinho proceeded to take charge of Inter Milan the following year.

Yet having been left aggrieved at some of the decisions of referees during his time in Italy, Mourinho was slapped with a three-game ban and fined after performing a handcuffs gesture.

Having guided Inter to treble glory, the 62-year-old departed for Real Madrid.

And, as expected, fireworks followed.

Tensions between Real Madrid and fierce rivals Barcelona escalated during Mourinho's stint in the dugout, with several high-profile incidents.

He accused UEFA of being biased towards Barcelona after Real lost the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash 2-0 in 2011.

Mourinho even alleged that Barcelona being sponsored by UNICEF had something to do with his side losing the match following a masterclass by Lionel Messi.

In another match between Real Madrid and Barcelona, Mourinho poked the late Tito Vilanova in the eye with the world watching on.

Following his departure from the Bernabeu in 2013, Mourinho was appointed as Chelsea manager for a second time - with the Blues winning the Premier League title under the Portuguese at in 2015.

Yet relations with players and staff soured and Mourinho was axed shortly after publicly rebuking club doctor Eva Carneiro.

For a time, it looked as though the 62-year-old was done with English football.

However, Manchester United came calling in 2016 and appointed Mourinho as a replacement for Louis van Gaal - despite the Dutchman winning the FA Cup.

Mourinho won two trophies at Old Trafford, with both coming in the 2016/17 season.

As ever, however, controversy followed.

Mourinho infamously clashed with Paul Pogba, with footage of their row going viral in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

He also ranted about deserving 'respect' for having three league titles - which was more than all the other managers in the top flight combined. Another memorable moment was when he cupped an ear to Juventus fans after his team won 2-1 at the Allianz Stadium.

Mourinho also once wore a wire when managing Roma. When asked why, he said: "I'm not stupid, you know.

"Today, I went to the game with a microphone. I recorded everything. From the moment I left the locker room to the moment I returned. I protected myself."

Mourinho's nose-grabbing incident is just the latest in a long line of controversies.

It is unlikely to be the last, either, if his past is anything to go by.
