The Blues legend appeared to be in distress as he competed in the event on Sunday

Former Chelsea captain John Terry is recovering after completing the London Marathon in five hours and 43 seconds.

The 44-year-old football legend was among several former Premier League stars taking part in Sunday's event.

Terry ran to raise money for Rays of Sunshine, a charity that supports children and young people in the UK living with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses.

Speaking after the race, Terry admitted he was "feeling sore" following a "tough" marathon but was "pleased" to have raised funds for his chosen cause.

The five-time Premier League winner appeared to struggle during the marathon, particularly around the 21-mile mark.

Observers noted Terry walking with a pained expression on his face at this point.

He was also seen with what appeared to be blood from his nipple running down his white t-shirt.

The former England captain looked to be limping as he pushed through the final miles of the challenging course.

Despite the physical toll, Terry persevered to complete the full marathon distance.

In his recovery, the Chelsea legend shared an intimate photo on Instagram showing his wife Toni massaging his leg.

The image posted to his 8.7 million followers on Monday morning showed the 44-year-old laid out on a bed with Toni straddling his leg.

She could be seen massaging his quad area above the knee.

Terry captioned the photo with a touch of humour: "@toniterry26 looking after me this morning. I'm just stiff in all the wrong places", followed by three laughing emojis.

The couple have been married for 18 years, having wed in June 2007.

Terry's family showed strong support during the marathon, with his 18-year-old twins Georgie and Summer cheering from the sidelines.

The twins held large blue signs with encouraging messages including "run dad run" and "go JT! Keep running".

Toni was also present, presumably holding a sign reading "go baby".

One touching moment during the race saw Terry exchange two kisses with Toni as he continued his journey.

Summer was spotted on someone's shoulders, with the entire family wearing blue shirts to support the Chelsea legend.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Terry was joined on the marathon route by former Chelsea assistant manager Jody Morris.

The pair were spotted by cameras early in the race, drawing attention on social media.

In a video shared by Bobby Zamora, Morris joked that Terry was holding them back.

Terry later acknowledged this, saying: "Jody was held back by me today.

"He could have been sub 3hr 30min but he waited for me to walk a little bit as well. But we both completed it."

After the gruelling event, Terry shared another image of his post-marathon relaxation.

The photo showed him resting with a cup of tea and a packet of Viennese biscuits.

"Going to eat the whole pack," he captioned the picture.
