The Manchester City star won't be travelling to Germany later this month

Jack Grealish was reportedly caught 'off-guard' by his omission from Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024 on Thursday.

The Manchester City star has been a regular on the international scene over the past few years, making 36 appearances for the Three Lions since making his debut back in 2020.

But Grealish won't be travelling to Germany this summer as England look to win the European Championships for the first time.

The 28-year-old was one of the biggest omissions on Thursday, with James Maddison, Harry Maguire, Jarell Quansah, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Trafford and Curtis Jones failing to make the cut as well.

And The Athletic say Grealish was taken 'off-guard' by the decision to leave him at home.

A year ago, the City star was on top of the world.

He played a key role as the club won the treble under Pep Guardiola, emulating fierce rivals Manchester United in the process.

Grealish started the final of the FA Cup that year, with City beating United to secure the trophy.

And he was also unleashed from the start of the Champions League final, too, with City beating Inter Milan 1-0 to clinch European football's biggest prize.

However, last season, Grealish struggled for form and fitness.

Injuries meant he was restricted to just 36 appearances across all competitions, 14 fewer than the 2022/2023 season.

He scored just three goals as well, with Jeremy Doku often starting in his place.

And Grealish has now paid the price, with Southgate choosing to go with Anthony Gordon after he proved he was fit in training amid his ankle issues.

The likes of Maguire and Maddison have released statements admitting they're disappointed at having to miss the Euros this summer.

But Grealish has remained silent on social media, with the City star yet to react.

He has enough quality to ensure he's under consideration when the World Cup takes place in North America in 2026.

And how he responds remains to be seen, though he's sure to be cheering the side on from home like the rest of the country.

Maddison, meanwhile, admitted he was 'devastated' after being informed on Wednesday night that he wouldn't be part of this summer's big event.

“Devastated doesn’t quite cut it,” Maddison said on X, formerly Twitter.

“Trained well and worked hard all week but if I’m honest with myself, my form for Spurs when coming back from injury in the second half of the season probably wasn’t at the levels I had set which gave Gareth a decision to make.

“I still thought there would be a space for me in a 26 man squad as I feel I bring something different & had been a mainstay in this whole qualifying campaign for Euro 2024 in Germany but the manager has made the decision and I have to respect that.

"I’ll be back, I have no doubt.

“Wishing the boys all the luck in the world out in Germany, unbelievable group and lads that I literally call some of my best friends.

"I genuinely hope football comes home.”

And Maguire added: "I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.

"Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.

"For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.

"Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season."
