The Three Lions won 1-0 in their Euro 2024 opener on Sunday night

Harry Kane has admitted he's proud of his England team-mates after a nervy 1-0 win over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Sunday night.

The Three Lions won courtesy of a powerful header from Jude Bellingham, with the Real Madrid star rising to meet a cross from Bukayo Saka in the 13th minute.

England were the better side for the first 30 minutes, with Gareth Southgate's men dictating the proceedings.

Yet Serbia rallied and, had it not been for a splendid save from Jordan Pickford, could easily have secured a point.

Kane also went close to netting, with the Bayern Munich star seeing his own header strike the crossbar.

England, without a doubt, will need to be better than this if they're to end 58 agonising years of hurt.

Yet while they're likely to be scrutinised in the wake of such an unconvincing performance, Kane was happy with how things played out.

"We knew it was going to be a tough game, Serbia pose a lot of threats and have some good players," he told the BBC.

"They will make it a battle for you and I think we dealt with it really well.

"There was a spell in the second half where we got camped in our box and we found it hard to get out but it was an important win tonight.

"It's a tough game. They are a tough team and have good players.

"We stood up to it well and it is good to get the three points and [for us] to progress. It's good that we got the win today."

Bellingham was the best player on the pitch as England got their Euro 2024 campaign off to a positive start.

Fresh from winning the Champions League, the 20-year-old swaggered his way round the pitch with a dominant performance.

And Bellingham has sent a warning to England's rivals that his own confidence will only increase after such a positive result.

"Good game. I thought they are a very tough side," said the youngster.

"Very robust, strong and a big group of lads and it was important that we prepared well.

"The staff got it right. We prepared all week very well. We knew the roles we had to do. We try to keep to our own standards and try to do our own job.

"It's important that we got off to a good start. Positive inside the camp and onto the next one.

"I have got used to getting into the box, getting wide and trying to do that. I got into that habit at Madrid and I wanted to carry my form into the Euros.

"It's a great start for me personally to get my confidence up and to help the lads get the win is the most important thing."

England have now got something to hold onto as they look to reach the knockout stages of the competition.
