The England captain has one eye on leaving football behind one day soon

Harry Kane has become the highest-scoring English player in Champions League history after netting the winner in Bayern Munich's 2-1 victory over Celtic.

The England captain's back-post volley in the 49th minute proved decisive in the first leg of their Champions League playoff on Wednesday.

The goal at Celtic Park marked Kane's 36th in the competition, setting a new record for English players in Europe's premier tournament.

The 31-year-old striker was left unmarked at a corner to convert the chance, continuing his impressive form since joining the German champions.

Following his match-winning performance, Kane revealed his interest in potentially transitioning to American football in the future.

"It's something that's in the back of my mind," Kane told CBS after the match. "Obviously, I've been asked about it before and my focus is on here and the Champions League with Bayern Munich."

The striker emphasised that while he would like to explore the possibility of becoming an NFL kicker, his immediate priorities lie elsewhere.

"It's something I'd like to explore at a future date, but I still feel like I've got many more years ahead of me," Kane added.

Such a transition wouldn't be unprecedented, with former soccer players like Brandan Aubrey having successfully made the switch to NFL kicking.

Kane's NFL aspirations are rooted in his long-standing support of the New England Patriots and admiration for Tom Brady.

The Bayern striker watched Sunday's Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, admitting he "honestly didn't care who won."

However, as a Brady fan, Kane expressed satisfaction at seeing the Chiefs fail in their bid for a third consecutive title.

"All credit to the Eagles, stopping the Chiefs doing the three-peat," Kane said. "I'm backing my boy Brady, so it was nice to see it if I'm totally honest."

Kane has previously cited Brady's journey from sixth-round draft pick to seven-time Super Bowl champion as an inspiration.

The goal against Celtic marked another milestone in Kane's remarkable scoring record against goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The strike was Kane's 19th career goal past the Danish keeper, more than he has scored against any other goalkeeper during his time with Tottenham, England and Bayern Munich.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers was critical of his team's defending for Kane's goal.

"One of the world's best strikers shouldn't be left free in the box," Rodgers said.

The goal helped maintain Bayern's push for Champions League success, a key focus for Kane as he pursues his first major trophy.
