The 48-year-old has been out of work ever since leaving the Blues last year

Graham Potter has turned down the chance to manage Ajax with the former Chelsea boss still mulling over his options, it has been claimed.

The 48-year-old has been out of work ever since being axed at Stamford Bridge in April last year.

Ajax had identified Potter as a candidate to take over from John van't Schip at the end of the season following a difficult season so far.

But while Potter has held talks with senior officials at the Johan Cruyff Arena, Sky Sports say he's turned down the chance to return to management over in the Netherlands.

The Englishman is, it seems, still considering his options.

Potter was crushed by his sacking from Chelsea last year, having only replaced Thomas Tuchel in September 2022.

He had expected to be given time at Stamford Bridge as the first hire of the Todd Boehly era, particularly after his impressive work at teams such as Swansea and Brighton.

Yet Potter was doomed from the start at Chelsea, with Blues players never taking to him or his methods.

With the 48-year-old rejecting Ajax, it'll be intriguing to see what happens next amid speculation he's in the running to take over at Manchester United come the end of the season.

Erik ten Hag has overseen a turbulent season at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils well off the pace.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is now in charge of football operations at the club, is believed to be a big Potter admirer.

Ten Hag continues to feel he'll be given time to turn United around.

However, with the club a long way off rivals such as Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool, there's no guarantee that will happen.

Potter is not, however, the only boss who has been linked with United.

Reports have claimed the club has recently been 'intensifying' interest in Julian Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann is currently preparing for the European Championships, with his Germany side playing Scotland in the opening game of the competition on June 14.

And while he's been tipped to return to Bayern Munich, the 36-year-old could end up moving to England instead.

Tuchel has also emerged as a possible candidate to take over from Ten Hag at United.

Whether the club would go for such a combative character, however, is currently unclear with the likes of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal previously rocking the boat behind the scenes.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim was linked with United earlier in the season.

However, Liverpool are believed to be keen for the Portuguese to replace Jurgen Klopp come the summer.

And interest in Gareth Southgate and Gary O'Neil has been put forward, too.

United legend Gary Neville, though, thinks Potter, Southgate and O'Neil wouldn't be upgrades on Ten Hag for his old side.

“I said on Stick to Football last week that even Gareth [Southgate], as well as Gareth’s done with England, I’ve never seen the fit between Gareth and Manchester United," he told The Overlap.

“I’ve never seen the fit between Graham Potter and Manchester United, and that’s been a strong rumour. I don’t see the fit between Gary O’Neil and Manchester United.

“I don’t know [what fit I see]. Instinctively as a fan of a club when you hear a name, you feel it or you don’t feel it. You just do.

"It’s not a feeling I’ve had. I’ve not woke up thinking that looks like a United manager.”
