The 63-year-old has angered Scotland fans after making a joke on Tuesday night

Scotland fans have criticised Gary Lineker after he made a joke about Steve Clarke ahead of their Euro 2024 clash with Switzerland on Wednesday night.

The Tartan Army will go into the clash looking to bounce back after a humiliating 5-1 defeat to Germany on matchday one.

Goals from Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala, Kai Havertz, Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can ensured the hosts get their campaign off to a winning start.

And Scotland desperately need to win tonight to boost their chances of making the knockout stages of the competition.

Lineker is currently in the spotlight after appearing to flout BBC rules on Sunday night while presenting England's narrow 1-0 win over Serbia.

The 63-year-old seemingly wore clothes from his own Next range, something the broadcaster doesn't allow.

And, now, the former Tottenham, Leicester and Barcelona star has suffered another backlash.

The BBC showed an interview with Clarke, with the 60-year-old maintaining a professional tone throughout.

Yet Lineker couldn't resist a sarcastic dig at the Scotland boss, saying: "Well you have got to love Steve Clarke's energy and enthusiasm there, haven't you?"

Fans are far from happy, however.

Radio presenter Ewen Cameron said: "Here’s @GaryLineker being a t**t.

"Do you think he’d say the same thing about boring, I’d rather watch paint dry Gareth Southgate? Doubt it."

And other supporters on X have also condemned Lineker.

"Just saw that very disrespectful to Sir Stevie," said one user.

"Also the way they showed the 40yard Czech goal against Scotland in nearly every language, during the build up to the game against Portugal," raged another.

"Massive p**s take that would never happen if it was England."

A third said: "I'm just surprised the BBC remembered Scotland were playing tomorrow and did a piece on them, notice how they have a full programme dedicated to England on iPlayer tonight."

A fourth stated: "Agree. Turned off halfway through that interview."

And a fifth said: "Gary is not especially known for Churchillian pronouncements."

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Clarke, meanwhile, has called for his Scotland players to rise to the occasion against Switzerland tonight.

Scotland have never qualified for the knockout stages of the European Championships in their entire history.

Yet Clarke wants his side to learn from the German debacle as they look to progress to the round of 16.

“It’s about doing better,” he said. “I don’t want to put any labels on it. It’s about doing better and working better into the game. We thought we were well prepared for Germany and obviously we weren’t.

"So this time we don’t want to say too much and hopefully our actions on the pitch will show that we have prepared well.

"And a positive result would be lovely.”

He added: "We didn't start well at all against Germany.

“After seven minutes we were chasing the game and after 20 minutes it was looking like a long night. So we need to make sure that we start well and do better.

"Make sure we get a good foothold in the game right from the start.”
