Jermaine Jenas was previously seen as the natural successor to Gary Lineker as presenter of Match of the Day.

Gary Lineker previously gave his blessing for Jermaine Jenas to one day replace him as host of Match of the Day before the 41-year-old was sacked by the BBC.

Jenas was brutally dismissed by the channel on Thursday following complaints about workplace conduct.

The 41-year-old was a host on The One Show and also worked as a pundit for Match of the Day along with the channel's coverage of the FA Cup and World Cup.

He last presented The One Show with Alex Jones on July 22nd and was absent from Match of the Day last weekend, however he was on punditry duty with TNT Sport for Liverpool's match against Ipswich.

But Jenas now won't be appearing back on BBC after the channel confirmed he had been dismissed as part of their presenting line-up over allegations of inappropriate behaviour.

It all but ends Jenas' hopes of one day replacing Lineker as presenter of Match of the Day.

Lineker confirmed this week that he has at least one year remaining on his BBC contract with no update on whether he will extend his current deal.

Jenas said back in 2021 that he would jump at the chance to one day replace Lineker and the 63-year-old responded with high praise for his colleague at the time.

Lineker said: “Jermaine is my natural successor — I think he’s doing well.”

BBC staff were informed of Jenas' sacking via the broadcaster's Director of Sport Alex Kay-Jelski.

The BBC chief sent a short email to the sport staff, which read: "Hi all.

"I wanted to let you know that Jermaine Jenas is no longer working for the BBC.Thanks. Alex."

Jenas was seemingly blindsided by his sudden dismissal from the BBC while live on air with talkSPORT.

And the former England midfielder was clearly angry over the whole situation as he addressed the allegations.

"I can’t really talk about it,” he said.
