Gary Lineker will step down as the main presenter of Match of the Day at the end of the season.

Gary Lineker sparked speculation with a playful comment about leaving Match of the Day earlier than planned during Saturday night's show, following his analysis of the Premier League title race.

The veteran presenter, who is set to depart the programme at the end of this season, made the quip after discussing Arsenal's recent struggles.

"Well, I was going to leave at the end of the season, but, the title race is done isn't it? Goodbye," Lineker joked as he wrapped up the January 4 broadcast alongside pundits Danny Murphy and Micah Richards.

The 64-year-old's remarks came after reviewing seven Premier League matches, including Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Arsenal's recent form has seen them drop points in three of their last six matches, putting them at a significant disadvantage in the title race.

Liverpool have established a commanding five-point lead at the top of the table, with two games still to play.

Under new manager Arne Slot, Liverpool's dominance this season has led Lineker to express doubts about Arsenal's ability to close the growing gap.

The title race now appears likely to produce a winner other than Manchester City for the first time since Liverpool's Premier League triumph in 2020 under Jurgen Klopp.

While Lineker will step down from Match of the Day after this season, he has secured his future with the BBC through a new 18-month contract.

The agreement will see him front the broadcaster's coverage of the 2026 World Cup.

He will also continue to present FA Cup matches during the 2025/26 campaign.

Beyond these flagship programmes, Lineker will maintain his presence on the MOTD Top Ten podcast.

His show The Rest is Football will remain available on BBC Sounds, ensuring his voice stays part of the corporation's sports coverage.

The new deal marks a transition rather than a complete departure for the former England striker.

The BBC appear to be moving towards a co-hosting format, marking a significant change from Lineker's solo presentation style.
