The 63-year-old has opened up ahead of Tottenham's Premier League clash with Leicester

Gary Lineker has confessed he's made an 'error' about Tottenham, with the Match of the Day host U-turning over his prediction on his former side for the current Premier League season.

Lineker recently said Spurs will finish fifth again, with Ange Postecoglou's side narrowly missing out on Champions League football last term.

Tottenham will open their Premier League campaign against Leicester tonight (8pm).

They will be hoping to build on a promising debut season under Ange Postecoglou, whose stock has risen drastically over the past 12 months.

Lineker, speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, said he made an 'error' about where his old team will finish.

He's now corrected himself, with the BBC man saying he thinks they'll end up fourth instead - which would be enough to secure the Champions League football they crave.

“Just a quick one on Leicester and Tottenham while I think about it,” said Lineker.

“When we did our predictions, I made an error.

“It’s okay to change it now, because they haven’t played yet.

"But I was meant to put Tottenham in the top four. I only had three Champions League spots. I am just going to correct myself there and put Tottenham in the top four.

“It’s myself. I listen to the podcast, to check that we don’t mess up too much and I thought, ‘hang on a minute? Why did I put Tottenham fifth when I was meant to put them third or fourth, battling with Liverpool’.

"I even said ‘batting with Liverpool’. So, just to be clear.”

Tottenham have bolstered their squad this summer as they continue to place their faith in Postecoglou.

They retained the services of Timo Werner, who had initially joined the club on loan from RB Leipzig back in January.

Archie Gray was recruited from Leeds, with Dominic Solanke touching down from Bournemouth as a belated replacement for Harry Kane.

And Wilson Odobert was snapped up from Burnley over the weekend, too.

Speaking ahead of his side's league opener, meanwhile, Postecoglou said he was keen to see 'improvement' from his team.

"I go into every season with the same kind of target of trying to be successful," said the Australian.

"The starting point for us is improvement. Improvement in our football, improvement in the consistency of our football.

"We had a decent season last year. We certainly improved on the season last year in terms of results alone.

"Obviously, we changed the football and we had some really good moments and some moments where we had to work really hard to get some results and probably the back end of last season was disappointing for us.

"There’s a lot in there but for us if we can get improvement in that then more consistency gives us an opportunity and a platform to try to achieve something which is what you go into every season trying to do."
