The Three Lions boss has indicated this tournament could be his last

Gareth Southgate has sensationally hinted he's likely to walk away from England if he's unable to win Euro 2024 this summer.

The 53-year-old has been in charge of the national side ever since 2016, with the Three Lions improving under his watch.

England made the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia before making the final of Euro 2020.

Though they lost to France in the quarter-finals of the last World Cup, in Qatar, Southgate has stayed on as he looks to deliver the silverware supporters crave.

Though he's downplayed links to Manchester United, Southgate is believed to be eyeing a job in club management in the foreseeable future.

And now, speaking to BILD, the former Middlesbrough boss has indicated he'll leave if England miss out on Euro 2024 glory.

"If we don't win, I probably won't be here anymore," he said.

"So maybe it is the last chance.

"I think around half the national coaches leave after a tournament – that's the nature of international football.

"I've been here almost eight years now and we've come close.

"You can't constantly put yourself in front of the public and say, 'A little more please,' as at some point people lose faith.

"If we want to be a great team and I want to be a top coach, you must deliver in big moments."

Southgate signed a new three-and-a-half year deal with England after the last European Championships.

And he said he doesn't want to make a final decision on his future just yet amid fears it could 'put more pressure on the team'.

"The reason is that there would have been more criticism, which would have put more pressure on the team," he continued.

"England did that once before with Fabio Capello and there was a big drama before the tournament.

"It's better to check yourself after the tournament."

Southgate did previously consider leaving his post after the last World Cup in the wake of England's exit to France.

But he then decided to stay on, having been persuaded to give another major tournament a go.

Southgate's recent comments come just weeks after he said he wouldn't be deciding on his future, one way or another.

"If we did anything before the summer it would be detrimental to the performance, whichever way your decision went," he said.

"We’ve got to see how the summer goes.

"I know what we’re capable of achieving in the summer, I know what my own benchmark of success would be.

"After that, I’m not really thinking about anything else at the moment.

"Without a doubt, it’s exciting to take the team. Whatever the strengths of the squad, in the end, we’ve got to deliver performance, and you’ve got to make the best decisions for everybody.

"I won’t be in a position to make that decision before the tournament.

"My only focus is to try and win the tournament for England."

England face Serbia in their Euro 2024 opener on Sunday (8pm).
