It's been quite a year in football, with many players scaling some dizzying heights.
Others, however, have had a 12 months to forget.
The end of the year is nigh, with football fans looking ahead to the New Year and the prospect of success - or the possibility of failure.
GB News now takes a look at five winners and five losers from the year with less than a week remaining.
Winner: Mary Earps
Football winners include Mary Earps and Lionel Messi - but Joey Barton makes the losers cut
GETTY
England may not have won the Women's World Cup this year, but Mary Earps enjoyed a 2023 to remember.
She was outstanding during that tournament and, earlier this month, was crowned the winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
Earps also flourished for Manchester United, keeping 14 WSL clean sheets last term.
Whether she remains at Old Trafford amid interest from Arsenal, however, remains to be seen.
Loser: Joey Barton
Joey Barton has overstepped the mark with comments on female pundits, presenters, commentators and even referees.
He has stooped to a new low, targeting people for their appearance and sparking controversy in the process.
Barton even referred to his cousin murdering somebody with an ice-pick as a 'scrap'. Instead, Michael Barton murdered Anthony Walker in 2005 in a racist attack.
The 41-year-old was sacked by Bristol Rovers, too, and his controversial comments mean he is unlikely to ever return to football management.
Winner: Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi won the World Cup 12 months ago.
That achievement, coupled with his fine performances for Inter Miami and Paris Saint-Germain, saw him win a record eighth Ballon d'Or at the end of October.
Messi is still going strong for Argentina, too, with the country dreaming of winning the Copa America next summer.
Given how well Lionel Scaloni's side are playing, few would bet against that happening.
LATEST SPORTS NEWS:
Loser: Jadon Sancho
Jadon Sancho has endured a year to forget as Manchester United exit looks likely
GETTY
There was once a time when Jadon Sancho was considered one of the brightest prospects in English football.
Those days now appear to be over, however.
Sancho underwhelmed for Manchester United until September, when he was banished to the reserves after effectively calling manager Erik ten Hag a liar.
His time at Old Trafford looks to be over and a fresh start will benefit all parties in 2024.
Winner: Erling Haaland
Erling Haaland has plundered home the goals for Manchester City in 2023 - smashing records in the process
GETTY
Some thought Erling Haaland would struggle in the Premier League. After all, many big-money signings have had issues adapting to life in England.
But that hasn't been the case and the forward has been nothing short of outstanding.
Haaland's goals were key as City won a Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble - emulating fierce rivals United in the process.
The City star has 14 goals from 15 league outings so far this term and, if fully fit and firing, looks set to continue to smash every record.
Loser: Luis Rubiales
Luis Rubiales' reputation is in tatters after a 2023 to forget
GETTY
Luis Rubiales kissed Spain captain Jenni Hermoso after Spain won the Women's World Cup earlier in the year.
And while he did later apologise, his reputation is now in tatters.
Rubiales has fiercely defended himself but his behaviour, at the very least, was inappropriate.
He has been banned from the sport for three years and it's hard to see a way back for the 46-year-old.
Winner: Jude Bellingham
Jude Bellingham has sparkled for Real Madrid since his arrival back in the summer
GETTY
Real Madrid signed Jude Bellingham back in the summer convinced they'd recruited one of the best young players in the world.
Fast-forward to now and nobody is doubting that.
Bellingham has bagged 17 goals and clocked up five assists from just 21 appearances for the LaLiga giants.
If he stays fit, England fans will be dreaming of winning the European Championships next summer.
Loser: Todd Boehly
Todd Boehly has overseen a difficult year for Chelsea with some dreadful transfer deals
GETTY
Todd Boehly wants Chelsea to be a success, that much is clear.
But the way he has managed the Blues since buying the club from Roman Abramovich has left much to be desired.
Boehly has assembled a squad of big-money players but many have failed to live up to the hype, with Mykhailo Mudryk arguably the worst of the bunch.
The American businessman also made a huge blunder by hiring Frank Lampard at the end of last season and, given how poor Chelsea are these days, may have made another error by axing Graham Potter.
Winner: Unai Emery
Unai Emery has achieved redemption with Spaniard working wonders at Aston Villa
GETTY
Redemption.
That's what Unai Emery has achieved over the past year, with the Spaniard working wonders at Aston Villa.
Villa, before his appointment, were a mid-table team. Now they're a side dreaming of the biggest prizes, especially given their excellent Premier League form.
Emery had to contend with plenty of mockery during his time at Arsenal but is now showing fans on these shores just how good he is.
Loser: John Yems
John Yems has been slapped with a huge ban after discriminatory comments
GETTY
John Yems was sacked as Crawley manager back in December.
Then, in January, he was handed an 18-month ban from the sport after being found guilty of 12 discrimination charges.
In April, his suspension was extended to three years with Yems being given the longest-ever ban for discrimination in football.
That, coupled with his behaviour, makes him worthy of this list.
