David Moyes has opened up on a recent dinner meeting with Wayne Rooney as the duo reunited.

Moyes was manager of a teenage Rooney when he burst onto the scene with a stunning goal for Everton against Arsenal back in 2002.

The pair also worked together at Manchester United, though Moyes was relieved of his duties after just eight months - having taken over from Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Rooney is now a manager himself, with the 38-year-old in charge of Championship side Plymouth.

His side have endured a rocky start to the campaign, though did recently pick up a first Championship win with a 3-2 victory over Sunderland.

Moyes, speaking to the Liverpool Echo, shed light on what a teenage Rooney was like.

And he also revealed he was told some unbelievable stories that he wasn't previously privy to as well

.“Wayne was an unbelievable player so we don’t really need to mention that too much because everybody knows that," said the 61-year-old.

"But I think how you handle any 16-year-old is very difficult.

“I don’t think it comes with a book that tells you how to deal with it.

"He was a proper Scouser, he had his own ways and was a tough boy, [had] his own pals and ways of going about things.

“Going into being a professional is a big difference. He was still playing in the streets with his pals which was great and he was still going out.

“I’ve got to say that recently I had dinner with Wayne and he told me some unbelievable stories which if I think if was a manager now, I’d die if I heard them!

"I was really fortunate though and I remember Walter Smith saying to me: ‘you’re really lucky David, there’s a boy in the academy who’s a really good player, a boy called Wayne Rooney.’”

Rooney scored 17 goals for Everton before leaving Goodison Park, and Moyes, behind.

He earned a move to United after a stunning Euro 2024 campaign, where he bagged four goals as England made the quarter-finals of the competition.
