The Three Lions' wait for a first major trophy since the 1966 World Cup goes on

Roy Keane has delivered a scathing verdict on England after their 2-1 defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 on Sunday night.

The Three Lions had entered the showdown on the back of a fine performance against the Netherlands on Wednesday night, with a nation daring to dream once again as a result.

But England were flat against Spain in the final of the European Championships on Sunday night, with goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzabal securing the trophy for Luis de la Fuente's side.

Keane, speaking on ITV, believes England were 'found out' on Sunday.

The 52-year-old also said they'd 'got away with it' in previous matches, while the team 'lacked quality' throughout the competition.

"They haven't given their best the last few games, they got away with it. Eventually, they got found out," said the former Manchester United star.

"The best team won tonight, the best team won the tournament. Their record over the last 12 months has been fantastic.

"Spain have a lovely mix the way they play. They have a threat on the counter attack, they have youth, they have experience.

"They beat Germany, they beat France and they’ve beaten England.

"For all the talent they have got, I tell you, they work their socks off. They’ve got desire, they’ve got pride.

"It’s the biggest step for players and a manager to win something, A lot of England’s young players have been fantastic in this tournament, but they lacked quality.

"Fight, desire and options off the bench probably got them to the final, but top level sport is brutal. Sometimes the opposition are just better than you.

"In sport, you need to step back and be humble. Spain were the better team.

"Take your medicine, regroup and go again."

Gary Neville has praised England for getting to the final.

But he thinks their lack of quality on the ball cost them dear, insisting it's a repeat pattern for the national side.

"We can focus on a lot of things, but Southgate's answer on how we did not keep the ball well enough should be the title of the England book," he said.

"Every single England manager has said the same thing, every single England player has felt the same thing because we have lived it out there on the pitch and our legs have gone and we end up dying on our feet in the latter part of games where the other team have got stronger.

"And it is repeat, rinse and repeat. These lads have done incredibly well to get to a final, they have done more than we ever did, but some of the same patterns have occurred.

"Spain had a lot of chances, they could have won the game before we equalised. We got back into it, but we could have been 2-0 down before that and to not control the biggest games has been a problem for England teams in many, many tournaments.

"And to have to play from behind the ball and move your whole team up the pitch from the edge of your box to the other end of the pitch is very difficult.

"You can win the odd game doing that, you can win two or three games, but eventually you play a team with too much quality and that is what we found tonight."
