England fought hard for a 1-0 win over Serbia in their opening group game at Euro 2024.

England were far from their best against a resolute Serbia side in their opening Euro 2024 game, but Jude Bellingham proved to be the difference while both Marc Guehi and Trent Alexander-Arnold proved doubters wrong.

The Three Lions are among the favourites to win the Euros were given a favourable draw for the group stage with expectations of topping the group.

And it looked as though it could have been a rout against Serbia when Bellingham popped up with England's first goal of the tournament after just 13 minutes.

But Southgate's side struggled to kick on from there with their attacking players largely ineffective against Serbia's defence.

They had to cope with plenty of pressure from Serbia in the second half as they pushed for an equaliser but England managed to hold on for all three points.

GB News takes a look at how England's squad rated in their opening match of the tournament.

Jordan Pickford - 7

Largely unchallenged despite Serbia's threat in the second half. A fantastic save in the 82nd minute to maintain England's lead.

Kyle Walker - 7

England's best right-back showing why he's continued to hold down the starting role. When he plays well England usually play well.

Marc Guehi - 8

Could easily be England's secret weapon at this tournament. An assured performance from the youngster in a testing match.

John Stones - 7

His experience and comfort on the ball brings a level of calmness to England's defence that is desperate needed in tournament football.

Kieran Trippier - 6

Understandably not as effective as if he was on the right flank but did his job as required.

Declan Rice - 7

Stopped multiple threatening Serbia attacks. Could be England's most important player later in the tournament.

Trent Alexander-Arnold - 7

Like Marc Guehi, the only other potentially questionable pick but quickly proved doubters wrong at how comfortable he looked in midfield.

Jude Bellingham - 9

Simply on another planet to every other player on the field. What a superstar!

Phil Foden - 6

Struggled to get into the game out on the left. Could be taken out for England's next game against Denmark.

Harry Kane - 6

Just the one touch in the first half as he played somewhat of a sacrificial role. Should have done better with a great headed opportunity in the second half.

Bukayo Saka - 7

Was England's most dangerous attacker next to Jude Bellingham in the first half. Phased out in the second though as Serbia got a foothold into the match.

Conor Gallagher - 7

Brought on to try and provide some fresh legs in midfield and did just that to help out Rice.

Jarrod Bowen - 7

Similarly came on to provide England with fresh legs and did his job.

Kobbie Mainoo - 6

Came on for Jude Bellingham in the latter stages. Valuable minutes for the young man.
