The FA are keeping their options open as they look for the new England manager

The FA are considering Frank Lampard as the next England manager after reportedly drawing up a four-man shortlist.

Lee Carsley has been in interim charge of the Three Lions after Gareth Southgate resigned following the defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.

And the former Birmingham star has overseen two wins out of two with victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland over the international break.

But the 50-year-old will be fighting it out with other candidates for the permanent position - which includes former Chelsea and Everton boss Lampard.

According to the Telegraph, the Chelsea legend has been named as one of four coaches that the FA are looking at.

It is further reported that the FA have held talks with other coaches during their ongoing search for a permanent successor to Southgate.

Eddie Howe and Graham Potter are also on the shortlist, as well as dream appointment Pep Guardiola.

However, it would seem unlikely at this stage that the Catalan coach would leave Manchester City for the Three Lions.

But with his contract at the Etihad expiring at the end of the season, England would love to have Guardiola in charge.

Other candidates like Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino are also impossible with the former ruling himself out of management while the latter signed as the new boss of the United States this month.

Carsley is the favourite to secure a permanent role after impressing in his two games in charge while he will lead England in the October and November international breaks before his interim stint expires.

But Lampard might be the outside bet to become the new England boss despite not holding a permanent position himself since January 2023.

The 46-year-old was axed as Everton boss with the club in danger of relegation before he was signed as interim manager of Chelsea in April of the same year.

After replacing Potter, Chelsea's form drastically dropped and Lampard ended the season with the worst record among every Blues manager who had led three or more games with a win percentage of 9, with just one win in 11 matches.

Nevertheless, Lampard is still on the FA's radar, alongside fellow Englishman Potter and Howe.

Like Lampard, Potter has not had a manager's job since 2023 when he was axed by Chelsea while Howe is comfortable at Newcastle.

Speaking after the win over Finland on Tuesday night, Carsley said: “I definitely don’t feel comfortable [in the role].

“I’ve definitely been out of my comfort zone this international window.

"It’s been enjoyable but I’ve had to make sure that every single day I’m producing really high standards along with the rest of the staff.

“We try and do as good a job as we can and we’ve been fortunate to get two good results, and it’s about building on that now."
