The 46-year-old has been linked with the Three Lions amid uncertainty over his future at St James' Park

Eddie Howe has reportedly been given 'assurances' by Newcastle amid speculation he could replace Gareth Southgate as England manager.

Southgate left his post with the Three Lions last week, less than 48 hours after his side had been beaten by Spain in the final of Euro 2024.

Howe is considered the favourite to take over, with the FA full of admiration for the 46-year-old given all he's achieved during his career.

On Friday, Howe hinted he could leave Newcastle if there were any disagreements with the club's hierarchy. He said: “There’s absolutely no point in me saying I’m happy staying at Newcastle if the dynamic isn’t right.

"I’m certainly not serving Newcastle well if I do that.”

Now, according to The Telegraph, Newcastle have given Howe assurances after the board were left 'alarmed' by his comments.

There have been changes behind the scenes over on Tyneside this summer, with co-owner Amanda Staveley leaving suddenly and Paul Mitchell coming in as sporting director.

It's claimed Newcastle 'had not been warned' that Howe would publicly air his frustrations.

However, rather than rebuke the Englishman, they've instead opted to engage him in clear-the-air talks.

They have offered reassurances that he will continue to hold 'significant power' at the club, while he also won't be demoted to a first-team coach.

Darren Eales, Newcastle chief executive, has told Howe he will retain a big say in recruitment.

He will also reportedly be involved 'in all major decisions of the club's direction of travel'.

Howe is pleased with how the talks went and Newcastle are now confident he won't replace Southgate, despite the obvious temptation.

The former Bournemouth boss has told the club he is happy to allow a shortlist of players to be drawn up for him to assess, while also stressing he's happy to recruit from foreign markets.

Newcastle could lose Kieran Trippier this summer, while uncertainty surrounds the futures of Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff.

The Toon want a right-side forward and a right-sided centre-back as they look to improve on last season's seventh-placed finish.

It remains to be seen who England appoint as Southgate's successor.

Graham Potter wants a return to management and is on the market, having been out of work since leaving Chelsea back in April 2023.

Mauricio Pochettino is admired, though the FA's stance on bringing him in is currently unclear.

Thomas Tuchel is reportedly interested, with the German also on the market following his departure from Bayern Munich earlier this summer.

Jurgen Klopp would be a dream pick but isn't ready to return to management just yet.

And though Pep Guardiola is also on England's shortlist, there's an element of risk attached to the Spaniard given he's yet to indicate whether he'll be staying at Manchester City beyond next summer.
