The Three Lions return to action at Euro 2024 tonight hoping to top their group

Paul Scholes appears to have taken aim at Gareth Southgate on social media ahead of England's Euro 2024 clash with Slovenia tonight.

The Three Lions will finish top of their group if they secure all three points, heaving beaten Serbia and drawn with Denmark at the tournament so far.

For tonight's match at the Cologne Stadium, England are set to make just one change.

Conor Gallagher will be brought into the side at the expense of Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the Chelsea star set to bring an injection of fresh energy into the team.

But Scholes doesn't appear to be happy.

In a 14-word message uploaded on social media, he said: "Why are we obsessed with energy when we should be obsessed with the brain."

Scholes is regarded as one of the most intelligent footballers in English history.

He was a conductor for Manchester United for over 20 years, winning 11 Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford.

Scholes also played 66 times for England but closed the door on his international career after the Three Lions lost to Portugal at Euro 2024.

Speaking earlier in the week, Scholes expressed a belief Kobbie Mainoo should come into the team.

The United star enjoyed a positive season for his club, shining as they won the FA Cup under Erik ten Hag.

And Scholes suggested Mainoo should play because he'd bring 'control' to England.

“I think [Phil Foden] can play on the left-hand side, he’s done that for Manchester City loads of times,” he told TNT Sports.

“It’s just having control of the ball in the middle of the pitch.

"If you don’t have control in the middle of the pitch, then he can’t go wandering inside where he is most dangerous.

“I’m sure that is what the plan is: to get Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold to control the game and then you can virtually do what you want then going forward.

“Phil Foden can pop up anywhere he wants to on a football pitch and he’ll be a threat.

“If Kobbie Mainoo came in, all of a sudden you have control. You have a player who makes your team play football.”

Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, thinks Southgate would be wise to drop Alexander-Arnold for the Slovenia clash - with the Liverpool star struggling in midfield.

"I’ve been quite critical of Trent,” said the former Everton and Manchester United star.

“I love Trent as a player, as a full-back or as a right-back coming in at the right time, but I think to play him in the middle of the pitch in international football, it’s so different to playing as a full-back.

“I’ve said it many times, I wouldn’t have played him there. But he’s got Mainoo, he’s got [Adam] Wharton.

"For me, I play Jude [Bellingham] in the middle next to [Declan] Rice and you get your width with [Anthony] Gordon and Foden.”
