Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag after a poor start to the season

David de Gea posted a telling message on social media in the wake of Erik ten Hag's sacking at Manchester United.

The Dutchman was axed by the Red Devils on Monday after a 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Sunday proved to be the final straw.

It comes after a disastrous campaign to date that has left United 14th in the Premier League after nine games, having scored a measly eight goals.

Only Crystal Palace and Southampton have scored fewer goals this season so far in the league while United have also only managed three draws in the Europa League.

During his time at Old Trafford, Ten Hag was not afraid to make enemies and clashed with several players including Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and De Gea.

Despite being United's No. 1 for 12 seasons, Ten Hag ditched the Spaniard after one year and replaced him with Andre Onana.

And moments after it was announced that Ten Hag had been sacked, De Gea responded with an emoji of a hand pinched together.

Fans seemed to think that this was a response to the 54-year-old's departure from Old Trafford, who only had his contract extended in the summer.

This fan wrote: "Hahahaha David couldn't wait. Bigger legend in my book to Man Utd than ten Hag."

While a second posted: "The emoji usually means "perfection" or "just right," like when something is done exactly as it should be. So he meant it was right to sack Ten Hag."

And a third responded: "No way!"

United are already looking for replacements for Ten Hag while assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has taken over on a caretaker basis.

Ruben Amorim, Thomas Frank and Graham Potter are among those who have been linked to the post.

However, Amorim appeared to distance himself from the role while he has also been tipped to take over at Manchester City at the end of the season.

Speaking in a press conference on Monday, Amorim said: "I was already expecting this question and obviously, I’m not going to talk about the future.

"Because otherwise, I’ll always have to comment. I’m very proud to be Sporting coach, that’s all."

United posted a brief statement on the decision to axe Ten Hag on Monday morning, stating that former player Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as caretaker.

A statement read: "Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.

"Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.

"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.

"Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."
