The former referee still hopes to have a career in football

Disgraced referee David Coote has been hit with a fresh UEFA ban until June 2026 for violating "basic rules of decent conduct".

The former Premier League official, who was sacked in December, will be prohibited from "exercising any UEFA refereeing activity".

This latest punishment follows his dismissal by the PGMOL after shocking leaked videos emerged.

UEFA's control, ethics and disciplinary body determined last week that Coote had brought "the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute".

Coote was dismissed after videos showed him insulting former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, calling him a "c**t".

Another clip revealed him snorting what he later confirmed was cocaine while officiating at Euro 2024.

The PGMOL, headed by Howard Webb, found Coote's actions made his position as a Premier League official "untenable".

He was initially suspended on 11 November after the Klopp video surfaced online.

Days later, further footage emerged of him allegedly using drugs, prompting additional investigations.

European football's governing body stated Coote had violated their rules of conduct following a meeting last week.

This comes after UEFA had already stood him down from officiating European matches when the videos first emerged.

Despite his fall from grace, reports last month suggested the 42-year-old could potentially return to football as a VAR instructor.

A source close to Coote was quoted saying, per the Daily Mail: "He still gets on with all the other referees and I could see him taking a role somewhere. He'd be perfect as a VAR pundit or expert."

Coote has also faced a separate FA betting probe following allegations about a 2019 match between Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

The investigation centred on claims he exchanged messages with a friend who asked him to book Leeds player Ezgjan Alioski.

Coote has denied any wrongdoing related to these betting allegations.

The former referee has spoken about the personal toll of the scandal, saying he's been in an "incredibly dark place" since the footage became public.

"I didn't want to leave the house because I felt everybody would be judging me," he revealed.

He described having a panic attack while shopping, feeling everyone was watching him.

In an emotional interview, Coote explained how shame over his sexuality contributed to his drug use.

"I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well - a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being."
