The disgraced Premier League referee had his contract terminated after remarks he made about Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp.

David Coote could reportedly return to work in football as a VAR instructor, according to his friends.

The disgraced Premier League official spoke for the first time after being sacked by refereeing body PGMOL this week where he came out as gay.

He had his contract ripped up after several videos were leaked online of Coote snorting a white powder and insulting former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

But it appears as though Coote is still keen on a career working in football despite the scandal.

According to a friend, Coote may have given up a career as a referee but could still work in a different role.

A source close to him told The Sun: “He’s built up an incredible wealth of knowledge and skill.

"It would be a massive shame if that was lost because of mistakes he made while under moments of incredible stress.

“He still gets on with all the other referees and I could see him taking a role somewhere. He’d be perfect as a VAR pundit or expert.”

Paul Field, the chair of the Referee's Associaton, has jumped to the defence of Coote and feels the official deserves to continue working in the sport.

“He deserves to have a role,” Field said.

“The work he does with young people is exemplary. He’s an unbelievable tutor.

"He puts so much time and effort into the up-and-coming grassroots officials.

"He has a magnificent role to offer in terms of coaching, mentoring and support.

“I’d love for him to stay in the UK. I’d love him to be part of the English Football Association, training, mentoring, out of the public light to look after himself.

"He has so much to offer. I don’t think he knows how much respect he has from other referees for the work he has done.”

Coote revealed in his first interview since being sacked that he had struggled with his sexuality and his mental health suffered as a result of the abuse he received after matches.

Field pointed the finger at some former players for their part in Coote being targeted.

“These pundits, ex-professionals, who pile on are the source of the problem,” he said.

“I think the broadcasters have a duty of care to people. Ofcom ought to be writing to some of these media companies and radio companies, just to remind them of their own obligations.”
