The 39-year-old has enjoyed two stints with the Red Devils during his career

Cristiano Ronaldo could manage Manchester United one day, according to Michael Owen.

The 39-year-old is currently strutting his stuff for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, having moved to the Middle East back in December 2022.

Ronaldo is a legend at United, having fired the club to three Premier League titles and the Champions League during his first stint at Old Trafford.

Though he didn't win any silverware upon returning in the summer of 2021, he still added to his legacy with 27 more goals in their famous red and white colours.

Erik ten Hag is currently a man under pressure at United.

And Owen, speaking to TVSporten, believes Ronaldo could end up managing the Red Devils one day in the future.

"I'd be fascinated to see what Cristiano Ronaldo is going to do when he retires," he said.

"Obviously, they're [Ronaldo and Lionel Messi] are not far away from that being the case.

"Their life has been in football and they absolutely love the sport and whether they can walk away from it in its entirety remains to be seen, they might want to go and own a club.

"They're probably one of a few footballers that have got the money to go and own a big club so that could take precedence over coaching.

"It'll be fascinating to see. I would say the likely person out of the two to go and manage would be Ronaldo.

"Just looking from the outside, it feels like he might want tobe at the side of the pitch managing Portugal like he did at Euro 2016.

"He looks like a coach, he looks like he wants to coach, so he might want to go down that route.

"The Portugal job, probably in the future we might have his name on it, you never know.

"Of course, if he does well, then great teams like Manchester United, Real Madrid would then be looking at him."

United chose to stick with Ten Hag, the man who cut Ronaldo loose, earlier in the summer despite winning the FA Cup.

The 54-year-old has seen his team lose three of their first four matches this season, however.

Their defeat in the Community Shield against Manchester City has been followed by losses to Brighton and Liverpool in the league.

And Owen thinks United would be wise to axe Ten Hag while the season can still be salvaged.

"I think Man Utd are going to need a change of manager before they have an upturn in fortunes, so is anybody surprised about their start to the season?" he added.

"They possibly got lucky to get three points at home in the first game [against Fulham]. But whichever way you look at it, you know, there's not enough change.

"I'm still of the opinion that there's a little bit that needs to change at Manchester United before they can start progressing."
