The Portugal international left Old Trafford in November 2022 after criticising the club

Manchester United players reportedly thought Erik ten Hag 'unnecessarily humiliated' Cristiano Ronaldo during their time working together at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo was at the club when Ten Hag was appointed as Ralf Rangnick's replacement in 2022.

However, their alliance would last just a few months with the Portugal international failing to impress his new manager.

In a 2-0 victory over Tottenham in October 2022, Ten Hag asked Ronaldo to come on in the closing stages.

The 39-year-old was furious and opted to storm down the tunnel instead, with Ten Hag then deciding to take action.

According to ESPN, most United players felt the Dutchman was in the right. Ronaldo had, after all, flatly refused to come on.

However, they feel Ten Hag took it one step too far and 'unnecessarily publicly humiliated' the football icon by banning him from the club's dressing room.

As part of his punishment, Ronaldo was banned from the first team dressing room and ordered to train away from the rest of the squad.

When he tried to enter the dressing room in order to retrieve a pair of his trainers, however, he was informed by staff he wasn't allowed in.

Ronaldo then proceeded to enlist an academy player to go into the dressing room on his behalf.

However, United players believed the blanket ban was the wrong move - with Ten Hag viewed as overstepping the line.

Another star the 54-year-old argued with was Jadon Sancho.

After a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal last year, Ten Hag said the England international wasn't training well enough to be considered for selection.

This riled Sancho, who effectively called his manager a liar on social media. As a result, he was forced to train, eat and change on his own.

United players, at first, backed Ten Hag - imploring Sancho to provide the public apology his manager wanted.

Yet as the situation went on, an increasing number felt that, once again, Ten Hag had taken things too far.

Sancho was loaned to Borussia Dortmund in January and flourished as the German giants reached the final of the Champions League.

But figures at United reportedly sent text messages to former players working in the media telling them to 'stop talking up the forward's contribution'.

This, it's claimed, was because it 'reflected badly on the club'.

Fast-forward to now, however, and Ten Hag is a figure of United's past.

He won two trophies at Old Trafford but never got close to ending their agonising wait for a first Premier League title since 2013.
