The football icon left Everton for Manchester United in controversial circumstances back in 2004

Coleen Rooney believes it was 'not fair' that she and her husband, Wayne Rooney, received a strong backlash after the football icon left Everton for Manchester United back in 2004.

Rooney was a wanted man that summer, having dazzled for England at the European Championships in Portugal.

And the forward ended up joining United, having been charmed by Sir Alex Ferguson into leaving his boyhood club.

Fans were, however, far from happy. The Rooney family were the victims of a big backlash, with their property even damaged as a result of his decision to leave Everton behind.

Coleen, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, has now opened up on that time of their lives.

And she's admitted it was 'tough' for the couple to cope with, while also revealing that Ferguson implored them to leave Liverpool for Manchester.

"Our house got spray painted everywhere, and there were smashed windows in cars," she said.

"We literally took ourselves and moved because Sir Alex Ferguson said that he wanted us out of Liverpool. But it was our families that got the backlash then, and that wasn't fair.

"Wayne [Rooney] never went into Liverpool for a while after that to get food or go shopping because people would just shout stuff.

"It was tough, but it was worth it for him because he went on to win and seize the lead goal scorer. We had some fantastic times there."

Rooney became a legend during his time at United.

He bagged a staggering 253 goals, which is four more than the late, great Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney won five Premier League titles at United, too, while he also helped them win the Champions League in 2008.

Coleen and Wayne are childhood sweathearts, having first met at the age of 12.

They started dating when they were 16 and, 23 years on, their relationship is still going strong.

Wayne proposed to Coleen at a petrol station - which is something she admits she didn't see coming.

"That's right [Wayne proposed to me at a petrol station]. We were only 17, and we were going for a Chinese,@" she said.

"I can't remember whether we were arguing or something, but I said that I didn't want to go for Chinese.

"So, we stopped at the petrol station, then he went in, came out, [got down on one knee] and said 'I was going to ask you when we were at the Chinese' – now I'm glad he never asked me when we were out for a Chinese!

"Then we went back to my mum's and had corned beef hash.

"He's not very good at keeping secrets, so I knew it was going to happen – I didn't think it would be then."

On Wayne getting a tattoo in tribute of her, Coleen added: "We were going to a party as one of our friends was turning 18, who was a bit older than us.

"That day, I got a phone call, and it was his cousin who asked me if I spelled my name with one L or two L's. I said one L and asked why, and he said he was in the town with Wayne, who was getting a tattoo!

"He walks into the party with his top off, showing everyone – I felt ashamed. He told me it was fine because we were going to be together forever."
