The two footballers past and present dressed to impress on Tuesday night

Mary Earps and Alex Scott have been criticised online for their stunning dresses after attending the BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony on Tuesday night.

Scott was presenting for the broadcaster and opted to wear a plunging orange outfit.

Earps, meanwhile, wore a see-through get-up before going on to claim the big prize in Salford.

Some fans have been critical of the pair, however, despite the huge nature of the event.

Yet BBC SPOTY fans have rallied round the duo, insisting criticism of their outfits is both unwarranted and unnecessary.

"The tweets about Mary Earps and Alex Scott's dresses...GeT a LiFe!" raged one user.

A second said: "I sometimes wonder why people say that Twitter is a cesspit.

"Having just looked to see what people (well, men in particular) are saying about the very wonderful Alex Scott, I'm no longer in any doubt."

A third raged: "Just love seeing all these Neanderthals absolutely losing it at trained tv presenter who has a degree in sports Journalism and Broadcasting - Alex Scott.

"It makes it easy to see who will be left behind as society evolves around them."

A fourth vented: "I see all the little men and bigots have felt threatened by Mary Earps and Alex Scott overnight.

"Really quite sad to see."

And a fifth said: "You’ve got to laugh at all of the big, tough men getting triggered because Mary Earps won an award."

Earps won the ultimate prize in Salford after playing a key role for England at this year's Women's World Cup.

The Manchester United goalkeeper saved a penalty in the final as the Lionesses lost 1-0 to Spain.

Stuart Broad came in second after retiring from cricket earlier in the year, shortly after a 2-2 series draw with Australia in the Ashes.

And Katarina Johnson-Thompson secured third spot after a brilliant year in athletics.

Scott was visibly delighted on stage as Earps became the second Lionesses star to win the award after Beth Mead 12 months ago.

And Earps admitted she was 'humbled' to etch her name into the history books.

“I am honoured and humbled because I think this is the ultimate all-round sporting accolade," she said.

"We have had a couple of incredible years, but this is just ‘wow’.

“It hasn’t been the easiest journey and I would not be where I am today without a number of incredible people in my corner.

"They have been with me through the really, really not so great times, but the last two years have been unbelievable and I have done more than I could ever have imagined and for that I am truly grateful.

“Thank you to my team-mates, and coaches – I wouldn’t be here without you all.”

She added: “(Winning the award) feels pretty great on the back of a couple of big years – 2023 has been wild in ways I never expected, I am really grateful.

“I always committed to myself that anything I would have after that period of time (out of the England team) would be a bonus and it just hasn’t stopped yet.

"I’m just trying to make the most of everything, because when it stops you miss it.

“I wouldn’t be here without my team-mates at the Lionesses and United; we’ve achieved some incredible things over the last few years.

"Whilst individual accolades are great they only come on the back of team success. So it’s their trophy as much as mine.”
