The Manchester United legend lost his job on Tuesday

The BBC have been forced to delete a post about Wayne Rooney after Gary Lineker kicked up a fuss.

The Match of the Day presenter was not happy after the organisation mocked up a picture of Rooney as a Peaky Blinder following his sacking by Birmingham.

Birmingham announced the sacking of Rooney after just 15 matches on Tuesday morning.

The Manchester United and England legend won just two games while in charge and Monday's 3-0 humbling by Leeds at Elland Road was the final straw.

But the BBC's reaction to the news on social media did not go down well.

The BBC Sport X account posted a mocked-up image of Rooney as a Peaky Blinder in a flat cap and suit, in reference to the TV drama based in Birmingham.

The post read: "By order of the Peaky Blinders, Wayne Rooney has been sacked by Birmingham City."

X users were not happy and immediately took to the replies to give their scathing verdicts.

And one of them was Lineker, who simply wrote: "Delete this."

The BBC seemed to listen to their long-serving presenter as the post swiftly disappeared.

Birmingham were sixth in the Championship when Rooney replaced John Eustace last October.

But a horror run of form has seen them drop to 20th, with Rooney lasting less than three months at St Andrew's.

Rooney admitted he underperformed but felt he should have been given more time by the club's American owners.

He said in a statement: "Football is a results business - and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be.

"However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed.

"Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback. I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16.

"Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager.

"Finally, I wish Birmingham City FC and its owners my best wishes in the pursuit of their ambitions."

Former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper is the favourite to replace Rooney, while Jesse Marsch and Will Still are also said to be in contention.

Birmingham Chief Executive Officer, Garry Cook, explained the decision to sack Rooney by saying: "We are committed to doing what is necessary to bring success to St. Andrew’s.

"The search for a successor begins with immediate effect and we will update supporters when we have further news."
