Former Luxembourg women's national team coach Romain Jean has died after suffering a heart attack during Wednesday's Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Benfica at the Allianz Arena.

Jean, who led Luxembourg's women's team from 2006 to 2012, received emergency medical treatment in the stands during the early stages of the match.

Despite being initially resuscitated by first-aiders, he tragically passed away whilst being transported to hospital.

The medical emergency unfolded in the southeast section of the Allianz Arena during the first half of the match on 6 November 2024.

First-aiders immediately attended to Jean, performing multiple resuscitation attempts before he was transported to hospital under intensive care.

Bayern Munich later shared details of the incident with German news agency SID, confirming the tragic outcome approximately one hour after the final whistle.

In a display of respect, Bayern Munich fans in the Südkurve, where the club's ultras are based, maintained silence throughout the match instead of their usual vocal support.

Flags were removed from the stands as a mark of solemnity, with the 75,000-seat Allianz Arena falling notably quiet.
