The Reds continued their march towards the Premier League title on Sunday

Liverpool boss Arne Slot was delighted after his side beat West Ham 2-1 at Anfield on Sunday to take another step towards the Premier League title.

The Reds went ahead in the 18th minute through Luis Diaz, with the Colombian bagging after a fine assist from Mohamed Salah.

West Ham thought they'd done enough to earn a draw when Andy Robertson scored an own goal with four minutes remaining.

Yet Virgil van Dijk came to their rescue, with the Netherlands international netting a brilliant header to secure all three points for his side.

While both Van Dijk and Diaz scored, Alisson Becker was outstanding between the sticks.

The Brazil international made several top saves to keep the Hammers at bay as Graham Potter's side hunted them down.

And Slot, speaking after the fixture, admitted that Liverpool were 'lucky' that Alisson had such a good day at the office.

"First half we did really well, good tempo and good movement - maybe we should have scored a second," he said.

"Second half it was all about Alisson.

"They could have scored two or three in two or three moments like last week when in 15 minutes Fulham scored three.

"Today we were lucky that Alisson saved a few times really well. The way we conceded was a big disappointment but the boys showed why they are in the position they are in.

"With these mentality players - it was a win for us 2-1."

Liverpool now need just six points to win their first Premier League title since 2020.

On the significance of Van Dijk's winner, Slot added: "It was definitely a significant goal because now we need two more wins.

"I think the first 33 games have showed how difficult it is for us to win a game of football.

"It sounds weird when you are so many points clear but that it is the current situation of the Premier League.

"To win this one is nice, now we know we only have to win twice.

"We know what we have to do which is difficult but we will fight for it as hard as we can."

Van Dijk, speaking to Sky Sports, was equally pleased.

"These things [the own goal] unfortunately happen and it was time to make it right," said the Dutchman.

"On to the next one. I am very happy to captain my 100th game for Liverpool, it was an emotional day with Hillsborough and that was the main focus. One step closer to all our dreams.

"Everyone knows how much I love this club and let's see what next week will look like."
