The winger is at Euro 2024 this summer with England hoping to go all the way

Newcastle were reportedly ready to sell Anthony Gordon to Liverpool this week before talks broke down.

The winger is currently in Germany at Euro 2024 and is hoping to start England's crunch clash with Slovakia on Sunday night.

Gordon has only been at Newcastle for 18 months but impressed last season, scoring 11 Premier League goals as they finished seventh in the table.

Though Newcastle have improved significantly ever since their lucrative Saudi Arabia takeover, the Toon need to sell some big names this summer in order to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.

And the Daily Mail say Newcastle were prepared to sell Gordon to Liverpool this week, only for talks to break down.

Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah as part of a swap deal but Liverpool are reluctant to let the young defender leave.

They're said to see the centre-back as a future England international, with the 21-year-old one of the club's brightest prospects.

Quansah featured 17 times for Liverpool last season, with the club winning 12 of those fixtures.

As for Gordon, the winger is said to be happy at Newcastle and 'loves' working under Eddie Howe over at St James' Park.

Howe doesn't want to lose the forward, having helped Gordon rediscover his best form over on Tyneside.

However, while that's the case, there's an 'acceptance' the club need to sell some big names in order to avoid a points deduction.

Newcastle are hoping to bolster their squad, despite being forced to work on a limited budget this summer.

They're in talks with Nottingham Forest over a deal for Anthony Elanga, with the former Manchester United star also set to be part of a swap deal.

Newcastle would send Elliot Anderson in the opposite direction, providing an agreement can be struck.

Elanga bagged five goals in 39 appearances last season for Forest, who managed to avoid relegation.

And Newcastle believe the forward would be an 'ideal addition' to their squad as they look to secure European football next season.

Gordon, meanwhile, fell off his bike while at Euro 2024 earlier this week.

The England star sustained cuts to his face, though has been able to train with the squad as normal.

And Gordon has hilariously vowed to perform a special celebration if he's able to score for England against Slovakia on Sunday.

“I’ll put the stabilisers next to the pitch and you lot will get the credit for the celebration," said the 23-year-old.

"I will do it. You’ve got my word.”

Discussing the accident, he added: “We went on what was meant to be a recovery bike ride. It was a lovely day.

"I was going down a hill, trying to take a quick video for my family, just to show them what I was doing.

“Before I knew it, I was head first into the floor.

“I’ve got a few grazes, a few cuts but it’s not anything painful.

“The bikes are electric so they are faster than normal bikes and, in England, the front brake is on the right-hand side.

“Here, I tried to press the left brake just to slow down and, next minute, it had not slowed down, it had fully come to a stop… and I hadn’t.

“I have gone ten feet in the air, chin first.”
