The Australian was delighted after his side advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition

Ange Postecoglou has revealed Tottenham after 'supporting' Timo Werner after his heroics in their 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Manchester City on Wednesday night.

The Germany international opened the scoring in the 5th minute of the match, with Pape Sarr doubling their lead before Matheus Nunes pulled one back.

Tottenham managed to hold on to claim victory, with Spurs now just three matches away from winning a first trophy since 2008.

Postecoglou, speaking after the game, admitted that Werner has been struggling a bit.

And the Australian also revealed Tottenham were 'supporting' the Germany international, who has often struggled for consistency during his time in English football.

"Great for Timo. He is going through a tough time, but the build-up play was great," he told Sky Sports.

"It should lift him, we are supporting him, but it is down to him and his approach to things.

"He was unlucky to not get one or two more, if attacking players don't score they feel anxiety a bit."

Postecoglou then proceeded to hail the way his side performed against City.

Though they had less of the ball than their opponents, they were still able to manage 11 shots - with seven of their efforts on target.

Tottenham have been inconsistent so far this term and, on Sunday, slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat away at Crystal Palace.

But Postecoglou was pleased to see his side bounce back, especially against such strong opponents.

"It's a cup tie played against a formidable opponent, I thought we did well for the most part," he continued.

"We didn't allow too many clear-cut chances. We could have put the game away, but City are always going to push you.

"It's an ever-evolving process, this team is growing all the time, but when you have growth you are going to stumble.

"As disappointed as we were on Sunday I had great belief we could come out today and put up a great show.
