The Toon won 4-3 in a thrilling clash at St James' Park on Sunday

Alexander Isak has shrugged off his unconvincing penalty after helping Newcastle beat Nottingham Forest 4-3 on Sunday.

The visitors went ahead in the sixth minute of the match, with Callum Hudson-Odoi curling his effort beyond the reach of Nick Pope.

Newcastle could have been forgiven for collapsing, especially given how they were battered 4-0 by Manchester City last weekend.

But the hosts then came roaring back, with Isak scoring twice after goals from Lewis Miley and Jacob Murphy.

Forest rallied towards the end, with Nikola Milenkovic and Ryan Yates finding the net.

But it wasn't to be for Nuno Espirito Santo's team, with Newcastle holding on to claim all three points and boost their chances of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

Isak's first goal was an unconvincing penalty.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Real Sociedad star opted to down the middle with a penenka, with Matz Sels getting a hand to it.

Some fans on social media were critical of Isak's spot-kick.

But the Newcastle star isn't too bothered and, speaking to Sky Sports, has admitted he's glad it went in.

"No, I already made my mind up I was going to go down the middle. It counts so it doesn't matter," he said.

"The most important thing was to win. We want to win more comfortably, but it was a big win."

Isak did, however, admit that Newcastle were sloppy at times - despite being pleased with the result.

"It was a brilliant first half, the reaction after conceding was really good," he said.

"We dropped a bit second half and conceded sloppy goals. I'm obviously happy to win the game."

Meanwhile, fellow goalscorer Miley has also opened up on Isak's penalty.

The defender, who is in the form of his life these days, added: "As soon as I saw the keeper stay I though 'oh no, he going to save it'.

"It's ridiculous really. It's a privilege to play with a player like that. It's great to get tips off him.

"We were under pressure a bit and it was quite scrappy in the second half. But at least we got the win.

"We all want to be in the Champions League. That's where we want to get to as a team.
