The incident took place in France on Sunday night

French football descended into chaos on Sunday night with a Nantes mascot stretchered off the field following a rugby tackle from his Rennes counterpart.

The Nantes mascot was brutally tackled while working at Roazhon Park.

The tackle was so forceful that Le Canari's head flew off in front of fans inside the stadium.

Medics ran onto the field to provide help and assistance, with a few individuals snapped looking amused.

The incident was just the least of Nantes' worries with the Ligue 1 side losing 3-1 to their opponents.

Rennes went ahead through Benjamin Bourigeaud in the sixth minute, with the midfielder scoring from the penalty spot.

Nantes were able to level through Pedro Chirivella just before the interval.

But furhter goals from Desire Doue and Arnaud Kalimuendo secured victory for the hosts.

Nantes also had Mostafa Mohamed sent off, with the striker seeing red in the 77th minute of the match.

Rennes have now shot up to sixth in the Ligue 1 table.

Nantes, however, are now down in 13th.

It is unclear whether the Rennes mascot will be punished for their actions.

But while his Nantes counterpart was stretched off, he was still able to retrieve his head in order to stay in character.

Nantes boss Pierre Aristouy, meanwhile, lamented his side's poor performance after the game.

“We did not produce a great game and we could have shown greater ambitions," he said.

“That goal [from Doue] should have never happened. I struggle to comprehend this goal.

"We did not anticipate Truffert’s run. We shot ourselves in the foot.“

As for Rennes manager Bruno Genesio, the 57-year-old was delighted with his side's win.

“This is becoming our season’s common thread. We are capable of responding to contrary events," he said.

“We were able to keep track of the game, get back into it and show a lot of character to force a win.
