Lewis Hamilton will start the Chinese Grand Prix in 18th after a dismal qualifying session.

Lewis Hamilton remained in relatively good spirits after his disappointing Chinese Grand Prix qualifying result, joking 's*** happens' to sum up his mood.

Just a few hours earlier, the seven-time world champion finished second in the first sprint race of the season.

Hamilton's car looked impressive throughout as he picked up seven valuable points.

But he was unable to carry that momentum forward into qualifying later that day with some changes made to his car.

The 39-year-old had it all to do on his final run with the track evolving quickly throughout Q1, but he locked up at the end of the 1.2km straight to cost him dearly.

Hamilton lost around half-a-second that ultimately bumped him outside of the top 15 to end his qualifying early.

"I couldn't get the rears to stop in [corner] 14," Hamilton started.

"This morning, George and I had very similar cars, but this afternoon we're trying to experiment still so I went one way a long way and he went the other way just to see if we can find anything.

"That's what we need to do at the moment but it didn't work.

"I'll give it my best shot. 18th is pretty bad.

"When I was making the setup changes I was like, 'it can't get any worse surely', and it did [laughs].

"So s*** happens."

"Apologies for the language at the end of that interview there," he said.

"Lewis Hamilton still thinking in confident mood that he can at least enjoy himself tomorrow."

Nobody has won more Chinese Grand Prix than Hamilton, who's stood on the top step of the podium six times.

Red Bull have once again dominated this season and secured a front row lockout in qualifying with Max Verstappen ahead of Sergio Perez on pole.
