The German hasn't been seen in public since his tragic skiing accident back in 2013

Michael Schumacher 'can no longer communicate verbally' following his tragic skiing accident in 2013, it has been claimed.

The F1 icon established himself as a legend of the sport during his motoring career, winning seven titles during his peak years in the sport.

Tragedy struck in December 2013, however, when Schumacher veered off course while skiing in the French Alps and tragically struck his head on a rock.

The 56-year-old was initially placed in a medically induced coma and, though he later returned home, hasn't been seen in public in the time since.

RTL reporter Felix Gorner has now delivered a health update on Schumacher, revealing the Formula One legend can 'no longer communicate verbally' - while also branding the situation 'sad'.

"The situation is very sad," said Gorner, who is reportedly close with the Schumacher family.

"He needs constant care and is completely dependent on his caregivers. And he can no longer express himself verbally."

Since the tragedy nearly 12 years ago, Schumacher's condition has been closely guarded by his inner circle.

There have been just a handful of updates, with wife Corinna Schumacher insisting the family are 'protecting' the F1 legend.

Gorner believes there's around 20 people who have access to Schumacher all these years on.

This, in his eyes, is the right move.

"Currently, there's a maximum of 20 people who can approach Michael," the reporter continued.

"And in my opinion it's the right strategy. Because the family is acting in Michael's best interests.

"They've always strictly protected his privacy, and that hasn't changed."

Back in the summer, rumours swirled suggesting that Schumacher had made his first public appearance since the accident at his daughter's wedding.

However, this was never confirmed or denied by the F1 icon's family - meaning the information should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Former Ferrari boss Jean Todt, meanwhile, said earlier this year that he sees Schumacher regularly.

“The family has decided not to answer the question [about Schumacher’s health], a choice that I respect,” the Frenchman said, in an interview with Italian outlet La Repubblica.

“I see him regularly and with affection, him and his family.

“Our bond goes beyond the past work. It is part of my life which today is very far from Formula 1.”

Todt has said in the past: “Michael is here, so I don’t miss him. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him.

“His life is different now and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That’s all there is to say.

“Unfortunately, fate struck him ten years ago. He is no longer the Michael we knew in Formula 1.”
