GettyBut regulation changes in 2022 saw Hamilton and George Russell struggle to compete for race wins and the former went nearly three years without a Grand Prix victory.
An agreement was announced earlier this year for Hamilton to join Ferrari for the 2025 season and the move currently on paper looks to be a smart one for next year at least.
Mercedes have gone backwards in recent weeks with Russell's third-place finish in Azerbaijan their only podium since the Belgian Grand Prix.
Meanwhile, Ferrari have back-to-back races in Texas and Mexico City and appear to have found a sweet spot in their car as they battle for the Constructors' Championship.
Montoya, who won seven F1 races in his career, feels Hamilton has made another savvy decision by choosing now to join Ferrari.
And he points to Hamilton's decision to leave McLaren for Mercedes back in 2012 as another example of the 39-year-old's impeccable timing.
"Every time Lewis jumps ship, he does so to a winning car," he told Instant Casino.
"It is remarkable. It is great for him and hats off to him. He goes to McLaren and starts winning.

Hamilton will be hoping to fight at the front of the grid next year, but will also have one eye on 2026 when new regulations are set to be introduced once again.
He signed a two-year deal with Ferrari so will at least be in the sport until the end of the 2026 season.
