Meanwhile, Hamilton will race for Ferrari in F1 this year after replacing Carlos Sainz, who has since transferred to Williams.

And his father, Carlos Sainz Sr, has now revealed that it was the Briton who initiated talks with Ferrari - rather than the other way round.

When asked if he was satisfied with how his son was treated, Sainz Sr said: "I wouldn't describe it as the Scuderia behaving badly. The circumstances of the perfect storm have arisen.

"Ferrari was happy with Carlos but the possibility appeared because Hamilton himself produced it. It is he who approached Ferrari, then the circumstances arose.

"Perhaps that process could have been clearer, but then it would have been leaked and Ferrari did not want it to be."

Sainz Sr also said he was pleased with the send-off his son received from the F1 side, adding: "They gave him a car, they invited me to drive in Fiorano with a Formula 1 [car]. I have no experience in any formula championship, very, very little, so for me it was a big thing.
