Lando Norris proved to be a popular winner in an entertaining Miami Grand Prix on Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton was one of the first people to congratulate Lando Norris after the McLaren driver ended his long wait for a first F1 win at the Miami Grand Prix.

Norris made his F1 debut back in 2019 and immediately impressed as McLaren attempted to catch up to Mercedes and Red Bull.

The 24-year-old had picked up 15 podium finishes heading into the Miami Grand Prix.

But that six-year wait for a first F1 victory came to an end at the Miami International Autodrome after holding off Max Verstappen.

It wasn't the most ideal start as Norris dropped one place to sixth on the opening lap.

However, he quickly got the McLaren up to speed and it wasn't long until his car was the quickest on track.

Verstappen had a rare off day and was working hard to keep his usually dominant Red Bull car on track.

At one point, the Dutchman smashed into a bollard and stopped for fresh tyres a few laps later.

Norris was able to stay out a bit longer and it proved critical as he ended up shooting up the field courtesy of a timely safety car.

Kevin Magnussen crashed into Logan Sargeant, allowing Norris to zoom into the pits under safety car regulations with other cars slowing down on track.

After the safety car period ended, Verstappen was unable to close in on Norris who held on for a historic win to become Britain's 21st F1 race winner.

Hamilton, who has won a record 103 races, was one of the first to congratulate his compatriots.

During the outlap, Hamilton was seen applauding Norris in his cockpit as the two drove side-by-side on track.

And the seven-time world champion embraced Norris in the media pen after the race with the two beaming from ear to ear.

"I'm really happy for Lando," Hamilton said.

"Such a special moment to win your first Grand Prix.

"I started at McLaren and I'm really happy to see them back at the top. It's been a long time."

Hamilton wasn't the only one happy to see Norris stand on top of the podium with Verstappen equally pleased to see his close friend break his duck in F1.

"If I get beaten, it's great that it has been done by Lando," he said.

"He deserves it. It's been a long time coming and it's going to be the first of many.

"Maybe it's also a bit of relief for him that he has that win now, who knows what's going to happen next?

"But for sure they had a strong weekend. Maybe it was a little bit messy still [on Saturday] but today they were flying - and especially Lando was flying. So definitely very happy for him."
