Lewis Hamilton was pipped to third at the Canadian Grand Prix by George Russell.

Lewis Hamilton held no punches in criticising his own performance at the Canadian Grand Prix after finishing fourth behind George Russell.

The seven-time world champion showed good pace in practice and looked strong in the early qualifying stages to potentially take pole.

But he was unable to make it count in Q3 as he could only manage seventh while his team-mate George Russell snatched pole ahead of Max Verstappen.

A dramatic Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday saw Hamilton improve his fortunes as he climbed up the grid to put himself in contention of a win.

It proved too much for the 39-year-old, who had moved up to third in the final stages of the race before Russell overtook him on the penultimate lap.

Fourth was still Hamilton's best finish of the season, but the British racing superstar was not happy with his display all weekend.

"It was a really poor performance from myself yesterday," he said.

"Some other things came into it yesterday, but mostly myself.

"And then today, just one of the worst races I've driven, just lots of mistakes.

"Of course, if I qualified better, I would have been in a much better position.

"I will go back to the drawing board.

"On the positive note, big, big thank you to everyone back at the factory for progressing this car because it is becoming a car we can fight with.

"That's a real positive going into this next part of the season.

"I know we have some more upgrades coming along the way so it's going to be a close battle and if I get my head on right I'll get the better results at some stage."

Hamilton also suggested that Russell missed out on a great chance to win in a car he felt was capable of beating Verstappen.

"I think this weekend the car was capable of winning," he added.

"That's why it's not such a great feeling.

"We'll take the points and keep moving, keep trying."
