The Briton will start at the front of the grid after an impressive performance on Saturday

Lando Norris has admitted he found qualifying 'tough' on Saturday, despite securing pole for the Singapore Grand Prix.

The McLaren driver has enjoyed a positive campaign so far, with the 24-year-old winning races in Miami and the Netherlands so far.

Norris was quickest in qualifying on Saturday, with the Briton managing to fend off competition from Max Verstappen to secure pole.

And the McLaren driver has now reflcted on the day in Singapore, telling Sky Sports: "It was tough, especially through qualifying.

"I was finding it a little difficult to progress much and gain a lot of lap time.

"And all of the guys around seemed to get quicker and quicker, so it put me under a bit more pressure, especially with just one lap at the end.

"It was good enough for pole and I’m happy with that, especially here in Singapore.

"A good feeling. I’ve felt good all weekend, I’ve felt confident, maybe not so much in qualy but we got the job done."

Norris initially struggled during the first sector.

But the McLaren star was pleased to overcome some early issues, adding: "A little bit of it is just that I had faith we were quick, so I didn’t have to over-push and I could just do what I’ve been doing the whole weekend.

"That’s a nice feeling that I didn’t have to go over and beyond, but it’s tricky.

"The car’s moving around, it’s bumpy, it’s easy to brake one metre too late all of a sudden.

"You pay the price for over-driving and over-pushing. But I kept it cool and I did what I had to do, so I’m happy."

Verstappen, meanwhile, also opened up.

The Red Bull star has struggled in recent weeks, with his F1 title under threat from Norris as a result.

Verstappen was delighted after finishing second, however, and is optimistic of a good performance in the main event on Sunday.

"The whole of qualifying went quite well," stated the Red Bull star.

"We managed to improve the car run after run.

"I'm happy to be on the front row if you look at where we came from yesterday.

"Q3 was tough. Your lap gets of course cancelled with the double-waved yellow then everyone only has one run to do the lap, so you don't want to overdo it. You want to stay within the limit.
