The Spaniard is on a high after recently winning the Australian Grand Prix

Carlos Sainz Jr's father, Carlos Sainz Sr, wants his son to join a team that 'allows him to compete for victories' when he leaves Ferrari at the end of the season.

Sainz Jr is being replaced by Lewis Hamilton, who is turning his back on Mercedes after a few mediocre years with the Silver Arrows.

The Spaniard put himself firmly in the shop window on Sunday when he won the Australian Grand Prix.

Sainz Jr was boosted by the withdrawals of the likes of Hamilton, Max Verstappen and George Russell during the race Down Under.

The 29-year-old then proceeded to joke about being 'jobless' for next season.

And his father wants the Spaniard to join a team that will give him a crack at being F1 champion, rather than just being the foil for somebody else.

"Right now it is being decided where to race next year, with whom, and I hope he will have the opportunity to drive for a team that allows him to compete for victories," he told DAZN.

Sainz Sr's comments come after Christian Horner refused to rule out signing the Ferrari star.

Red Bull currently have both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez under contract.

Verstappen has been linked with a blockbuster move to Mercedes, however, especially if Helmut Marko leaves his role as advisor.

And with Perez often struggling for consistency, talk of a potential move for Sainz Jr has arisen.

Horner, speaking after the race in Australia, said: “Based on a performance like that, you couldn’t rule any possibility out.

“You’ve had a very fast unemployed driver win today.”

Mercedes have also been linked with Sainz Jr, too.

But German newspaper BILD have shut down speculation, insisting Silver Arrows chief Toto Wolff is 'only' considering Verstappen and Fernando Alonso.

Sainz Jr, meanwhile, was delighted after winning in Australia after previously undergoing surgery on his appendix just two weeks earlier.

“It was a really good race; I felt really good out there," he said.

“Of course, [I’m] a bit stiff, especially physically, it wasn’t the easiest, but I was lucky that I was more or less on my own.

“I could manage my pace, manage the tyres, manage everything.

"It wasn’t the toughest race of all, but yeah, very happy, very proud of the team.

"I’m happy to be in a one-two with Charles [Leclerc] here. It shows that hard work pays off.

“Life sometimes is crazy, what happened at the beginning of year, then the podium in Bahrain, then the appendix, the comeback, the win... it’s a rollercoaster but I loved it and I’m extremely happy.”

When asked when he became confident of winning the race, he added: “I think from Lap 2 when I was leading.

"I said with the pace I had yesterday I knew I could get it done. Especially in clean air, managing the tyres, I could get it done."
