The Three Lions have won five of their six matches so far

England are set to start Marcus Rashford for tonight's showdown with Malta, according to reports.

The Manchester United star has toiled for his club this season, scoring just one goal under Erik ten Hag.

Rashford remains a key player for England, however, as they look to end their Euro 2024 qualifying clash on a high.

The Three Lions have won six of their six matches so far, with a draw against Ukraine in September the only blot on their record.

According to Sky Sports, Rashford is set to be given the chance to impress against Malta at Wembley tonight.

It's claimed the forward is set to start the match in London, in a big show of faith from manager Gareth Southgate.

Rashford was a late arrival to the England camp in midweek due to 'personal reasons'.

But he's seemingly done enough to impress his manager and earn a spot in the 53-year-old's starting XI.

Rashford will be hoping to rediscover his goalscoring form when he steps out at Wembley.

The 25-year-old seemed to have turned a corner in his career when he plundered 30 goals across all competitions for United last season.

Those goals were enough to propel the Red Devils to a third-placed finish, while they also won the Carabao Cup.

Yet Rashford's only goal for United this term was in a 3-1 defeat to Arsenal two months ago.

News of the attacker being poised to start at Wembley is likely to rankle some fans.

A section of supporters feel Southgate has his favourites, with the 53-year-old also criticised for being too loyal to certain players.

But Southgate is tired of trying to win people round and insists England are in a good place going into the fixture.

"Well, the reality of that is however well we play tomorrow people will just say it's a lower ranked opponent, so it'll be irrelevant," he said.

"People are going to have opinions. I'm probably tired of trying to fight that.

"In the end, it will be what it is. So, I'll just let our results and performances speak for themselves.

"You're never going to please everybody, so the best way as a football manager is keep winning matches, frankly."

Southgate has also been scrutinised for leaving certain England players out of his squad.

But the Three Lions boss says nothing is personal and his selection decisions are a result of his desire to succeed in the dugout.

"It's always difficult," he said when asked about the decision to snub Raheem Sterling.

"Given the number of injuries and pull-outs, we've not had to make so many this time, but it's part of being a manager to make difficult calls.

"As a player, you never agreed with a manager's decision to leave you out but you only hope you do it in as respectful a way as possible, with constructive points so they can go away and work on things.

"We're blessed to have so much depth in certain positions.

"You always have to adapt as you never know what's going to come your way.

"We've lost more players than normal - and there are some long-term injuries too - but there are opportunities for those coming in.

"We're looking for the right balance from the qualities we have but also have the right structure behind that."

On leaving out Anthony Gordon, he added: "I like his attitude, I like the way he works so hard for the team. Of course, I'm sure he was hoping to get a call at this moment, but there are good players playing well in that position on the field."
