David Beckham has made it clear he thinks Manchester United need the Glazers to leave Old Trafford in order to improve.

The American family have owned the club ever since 2005, with the club initially successful in the years that followed.

Trophies over the past decade have dried up, however, with the Red Devils winning just four pieces of silverware since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

The Glazers have backed every manager since, with United spending big on players such as Paul Pogba, Antony, Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho and Romelu Lukaku.

Still, however, they look to be trailing their rivals both on and off the field.

Old Trafford has fallen into a state of dilapidation, with video footage from a recent match showing a leak from the roof.

Beckham has been linked with a stunning return to United as an ambassador if Sheikh Jassim is successful in purchasing the club.

The former United star, who won six Premier League titles during his time in Manchester, has worked with Qatari figures in the past.

And while Beckham is coy on talk of a return, he's insisted the Glazers must leave - though stopped short of saying they've done a 'bad job'.

He told CNBC: "At the moment there has been no discussion.

"I have had a long-standing relationship with Qatar, because of my involvement with PSG.

"Obviously there will be some connection and people put two and two together.

"There will be a takeover, it is the right time. We all have our opinions on who should take over, but in my opinion it is about who cares about the club the most and will take the club back to where it should be.

"Everybody knows I am a Manchester United fan and I have been very vocal about the situation that is happening.

"I grew up there from a young age with a lot of stability with the same manager and the same owners.

"Manchester United will always be one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"We need to get back to that for the fans, the players, the manager because at the moment, there is no stability. We need to get the talk back on the field, not off it.

"I want to see an ownership group who will take the club back to what it should be.

"I am not saying the past owners have done a bad job but it is the right time for someone else to take over."

Right now, it's unclear if the Glazers will actually sell.

They announced last November they were open to potentially walking away, promising to conduct a 'strategic review'.

Not all of the six Glazer siblings are aligned when it comes to what is best for the club, however.

Joel and Avram have long insisted they know what's best for United and would rather stay in some capacity.

The other members of the clan feel that now is the right time to walk away, though, which is complicating matters behind the scenes.

Sheikh Jassim is no longer the frontrunner in the race to buy United.

It has emerged over the past 24 hours that Sir Jim Ratcliffe leads the race instead because he's willing to let the Glazers stay in reduced roles.

Meanwhile, as for Beckham, his X-rated blast when England lost to Australia back in 2003 recently came to light.
