Peter Wright has revealed that he discussed the media with Luke Humphries following their enthralling clash at the World Darts Championship on Sunday night.

Wright won 4-1 at Ally Pally, with the 54-year-old booking his place in the quarter-finals of the competition as a result.

It was a huge moment for the veteran, who has endured a difficult 2024 amid his struggles for consistency.

Wright and Humphries spoke on stage in the immediate aftermath of their showdown, with the two men both exchanging pleasantries.

And Wright, speaking to talkSPORT, has revealed his rival was angry at the media - having accused them of twisting his words before the showdown.

"[Humphries] was just saying that the media get carried away with silly comments," he said.

"He said that he didn't say the things that it actually came across like.

"I told Luke exactly the same, that is just the way it goes sometimes. He wished me all the best. He's a lovely guy, a real family guy and I wish him all the best moving forward.

"He's been a fantastic world champion, he's done everything for the PDC and for the sport.

"He goes all around the world doing interviews and stuff like Luke Littler has. They've been spreading the game fantastically."

Wright will now face Stephen Bunting or Luke Woodhouse in the last eight as he looks to win the tournament this winter.

And he was pleased to overcome Humphries, despite suggesting his rival hadn't been operating at the same heights of 12 months ago.

"Luckily I wasn’t playing Luke Humphries from last year because he was awesome," he continued.

"I’m a double world champion and I want to win it for a third time. I’m not too old and you only have to play well for two or three weeks the whole year. These three weeks are all that matters and I’m in the quarter-finals.

"I thought I played rubbish tonight so hopefully I can play better and score better in the next round.

"As long as this crowd is behind me, I’ve got a chance."

As for Humphries, meanwhile, the 29-year-old wasn't too downbeat after his defeat.

He insists he will become a world champion once again, while also expressing a belief he played 'okay' despite his failure to come out on top.

“I probably put too much pressure on myself tonight, but I thought I played okay," he admitted. “I kept hitting the treble first dart but I couldn’t follow it. Peter played fantastically and backed up what he said pre-match, so fair play to him.

"I’m still the world number one and this result won’t deter me from going on to win more.

“I know that if I’m going to be playing this sport for 20 more years I’m not going to win it every time.

"And if someone puts in a performance like that against you, you have to accept that the better player won.

“I wasn’t at my best, but I wasn’t terrible by any means - and I’ll bounce back. I will still sleep well tonight and look forward to next year.

“There’s a long season ahead of me. We have another 12 months before we come back here and do it all again, but I want to win more in between that.

“I’m not looking towards next year’s World Championship yet, but when we’re back here next year, of course I would love to get my title back.

"I don’t see my career ending as a one-time world champion. I do feel like I will win more.”
