The teenager has risen to No 2 in the PDC Order of Merit following his remarkable victory over Michael van Gerwen

Luke Littler has revealed he kept looking at his dad, Anthony, to calm his nerves during his World Darts Championship final win over Michael van Gerwen on Friday night.

The teenager had entered the showdown hoping to go one better than 12 months ago, when he lost to Luke Humphries at Ally Pally.

But Littler was nothing short of sensational on Friday, with the darts star winning 7-3 to secure glory in north London.

Throughout the clash, the 17-year-old could be seen frequently looking over to his father, who was watching the action unfold.

Anthony, a taxi driver from Warrington, was sat alongside Littler's mother, Lisa, as their son etched his name into the history books.

And the darts star has now revealed he looked over to Anthony to help sooth his nerves because his old man was the epitome of calm.

"My dad looked so settled throughout the game," he told the Daily Mail.

"When I was looking over to him, he didn't look nervous. So I knew myself that if he's not nervous then I just need to play with freedom.

"I look at everyone who's there. But he's probably the main one.

"He said last night that he wasn't nervous but at 4-0, he started to get that feeling in his stomach."

Littler has been inundated with support ever since his victory over Van Gerwen, who missed out on the chance to become a four-time world champion.

One person to send a message was Sir Keir Starmer, with the Prime Minister saying: “Mesmerising performance from Luke Littler to win the World Darts Championship.

“Congratulations Luke on being the youngest ever PDC World Darts Champion. An inspirational performance under such pressure to lift the trophy.

“You should be really proud of what you’ve achieved tonight, not just for yourself but for the sport of darts as a whole.”

Littler has also revealed he received a message from David Beckham on social media, too, after the football icon recently followed him back.

And the darts star has admitted it means a lot to receive such warm messages from so many people.

"It's big to know that not only the likes of David Beckham are watching, but the Prime Minister too, that's amazing," he added.

"It's crazy to even think about being mentioned in the same sentence as some of the best sportsmen there's ever been."

With Littler already a world champion at the age of 17, it'll be fascinating to see what the future holds.

Many think he's got what it takes to reel in Phil Taylor, who won 16 world titles throughout his glittering career.

And Littler admits it's something he feels is possible, so long as he's motivated.

"If I want it, deep down, then I could potentially do it," he said.

"I just want to pick up every title. Obviously that's what people will looking into (Taylor's 16 world titles) after winning my first world title so young.

"If I want it, then I'm sure deep down I can go do it."
