Before the contest, there was plenty of talk from the current world No. 1 - delivering a quick jibe saying that he only needed one more Sid Waddell Trophy to equalise Wright's whole career.
But the two shared an embrace - 25 years between them - as tears appeared in the 54-year-old's eyes as he claimed victory with a double-eight in a 14-dart match.
Wright's performance statistics were nothing short of remarkable, posting an impressive 110.93 average throughout the match.
The Scotsman maintained exceptional accuracy on the doubles with a 70 per cent success rate.
His scoring power was equally impressive, firing in five 180s during the contest.
The match began with Humphries showing early promise, securing a superb 161 finish in the opening leg of the second set.
The magnitude of Wright's achievement was evident as he broke down in tears following the confirmation of his victory.
The emotional scenes unfolded as the reality of his remarkable performance sank in, with Humphries' reign as champion coming to an end.

Wright's victory has secured him a place in the quarter-finals, which will take place on New Year's Day.
The World Darts Championship continues tomorrow with another double session, featuring matches including Luke Littler versus Ryan Joyce in the evening session.
"I have never had [crowd] support like this in my life. Thank you! I have never experienced anything like this. It's amazing," Wright told Sky Sports.
