The Dutch stars will no longer be on the Netherlands team

Two Dutch darts players have boycotted international duty because they don't want to play alongside their transgender team-mate.

Anca Zijlstra and Aileen de Graaf have made the move after Noa-Lynn van Leuven won a women's tournament in Wigan at the weekend.

Van Leuven made history by becoming the first transgender darts player to win a tournament against both men and women in the same week.

The 27-year-old won a Challenger Tour event against men before triumphing at a PDC Women's Series competition on Saturday.

The PDC currently follow guidelines set out by the Darts Regulation Authority, with guidance from the International Olympic Committee.

Trans players are able to compete due to 'no presumption of advantage' and because of 'inclusion'.

However, Zijlstra and De Graaf have made it clear they no longer want to play on the same team as Van Leuven.

Zijlstra posted a lengthy statement on Facebook at the weekend, confirming her decision to stand aside.

The 50-year-old said she felt 'ashamed' to play on the same team as a 'biological male'.

Zijlstra wrote: "With pain in my heart... The moment when you feel ashamed to play for the Dutch Team because a biological man plays on the women's team, it is time to go.

"I have tried to accept this but I cannot approve or justify this.

"I believe that in sport, there should be an equal and fair playing field, which should be used and accepted in good faith.

"After all, we have worked so hard to be relevant and competitive in this sport.

"I am also resigning my position as players' representative of the NDB with immediate effect.

"To clarify: The umbrella organisations can decide for themselves whether they allow a trans woman to play in the men's game, or a trans man to play in the women's game.

"I have always found it an honour to play for our country, and will always be open to returning to the National Team.

"I hope with all my heart and for all women's sports that people come to their senses.

"This decision has not been light and very difficult, 1991 has been the first time I proudly put on the shirt for the Netherlands."

De Graaf, 33, also revealed she would no longer be part of the Dutch team moving forward.

She wrote: "At some point you have to make choices when something goes against your feelings.

"You have to do what feels right for you. Hence my decision to leave the Dutch team."

Reacting to the news, Van Leuven told NOS: "I don't really feel the need to go further into it. This has been their choice and not mine.

"I think the only unfortunate thing about this issue is that a lot of people forget that I am also a human being."

NOS claims the director of the Dutch darts association, Paul Engelbertink, is set to make a statement on Monday.
